Morten Lauridsen의 Nocturnes에 관한 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 현재 생존하는 미국의 가장 대표적인 합창음악 작곡가 중 한 명인 Morten Lauridsen(b.1943-)의 작품『Nocturnes』에 관한 연구 분석이다. Lauridsen은 전문 작곡가이자 USC(University of Southern California) 작곡과 교수이다. 그의 작품들은 미국의 합창지휘자협회인 ACDA(American Choral Directors Association)를 비롯한 세계 유명 합창제에서 자주 연주되었으며, 아름답고 신비로운 분위기의 음악은 세계적으로 인정받고 있다. ‘Nocturne’은 밤의 음악을 말하는 것으로, 고요하고 명상적인 특징을 갖는다. Lauridsen의 『Nocturnes』는 밤을 노래하는 4개의 곡으로 구성된 혼성합창을 위한 연가곡으로, 2005년 ACDA National Conference 연주를 위해 작곡되었다. 『Nocturnes』의 첫 번째 곡「Sa nuit d'été(그의 여름 밤)」와 네 번째 곡「Voici le soir(밤이 되었네요)」는 시인 Rainer Maria Rilke(1875-1926)가 프랑스어로 쓴 시를 가사로 하였으며, 반주와 조성 등에서 공통점을 보인다. 두 번째 곡「Soneto de la noche(밤의 소네트)」는 칠레의 시인 Pablo Neruda(1904-1973)가 스페인어로 쓴 시를 가사로 한 아카펠라 곡이다. 세 번째 곡「Sure on this shining night(진실로 빛나는 이 밤에)」는 미국의 시인 James Agee(1909-1955)가 영어로 쓴 시를 가사로 한 낭만적인 선율의 곡이다. Lauridsen은 다양한 언어로 쓰인 시를 가사로 사용하고 반복을 통해 강조하였으며, 선율과 화음을 이용한 가사 그리기(word painting)의 사용으로 시가 가진 감각적 이미지를 음악으로 아름답게 형상화였다. 『Nocturnes』를 연구함에 있어 그 배경이 되는 녹턴의 역사, 시인과 작품 배경, Lauridsen의 생애, 그의 작품과 특징에 대하여 살펴본 후, 『Nocturnes』의 가사와 구조, 음정 및 선율, 그리고 화성 및 악상기호에 따라 분석함을 본 논문의 목적으로 둔다.;This paper aims to analyze the work 『Nocturnes』 by Morten Lauridsen (b.1943-), one of the most prominent choral music composers in the United States. Lauridsen is a composer and professor at the USC(University of Southern California) composition department. His works have often been performed by world famous choral symposium and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). His beautiful and mystical atmosphere in his music is respected throughout the world. ‘Nocturne' refers to the 'music of the night', which means a song of calm and meditative atmosphere. ‘Nocturne’ was used as a choral song, and most of the poems associated with the night were used as lyrics. 『Nocturnes』 is a song for a mixed chorus composed of four songs that sing the night. It was composed for the 2005 ACDA National Conference performance. Nocturne’s first song 「Sa nuit d'été」 and fourth song 「Voici le soir」 are poems written by Rainer Maria Rilke(1875-1926). These songs have lyrics in French and have common features in accompaniment and composition. The second song, 「Soneto de la noche」, is an a cappella song, which is written in Spanish by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda(1904-1973). The third song, 「Sure on this shining night」 is written in English by the American poet James Agee(1909-1955). As such, Lauridsen used poetry in various languages as the lyrics, emphasized lyrics through repetition of the lyrics, and beautifully depicted the sensual image of the poem with the use of word painting using melodies and chords. In this paper, the background of Nocturne, the poet and the background of the work, the life of Lauridsen, and characteristics of 『Nocturnes』 were studied. The purpose of this paper is to analyze 『Nocturnes』 according to its structure, lyrics, pitch, melody, harmony and music technique.
