Abstract
While queer theorists focusing on the history of sexuality have claimed that gender and sexuality are not essential factors in defining individuals in Renaissance but the products of modern ideologies, this thesis proves the existence of early modern homosexuals with William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (1596) and The Winter’s Tale (1610). The characters in both plays are considered problematic because of their causeless emotions. Although some Renaissance scholars have agreed Renaissance understood human emotions as the responses to bodily humors, this article brings ‘desire’ as a critical tool in interpreting these characters’ emotions. By declaring their state as “melancholy” and “hysteria,” it suggests homosexual desires as the reason for their suffering and demonstrates the reason why these desires have to be recorded as an “Aporia.” The first chapter examines the premise that homosexual behaviors were not prohibited in early modern England by pointing out that only certain types of homosexuality were approved. Also, it explores the way early modern anatomy understood the human body and female sexuality, allowing us to guess what it was like to be effeminate the social implications of that era. The second chapter explains why Antonio in The Merchant of Venice is melancholy, with the framework of renaissance melancholy and Sigmund Freud’s concept of melancholia. By analyzing Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621), this study reveals that renaissance melancholy, which is understood as the result of an imbalance of humoral fluids, indicates desire as the reason behind melancholy. This connects the historical approach to psychoanalysis and proves that Antonio is not a passive person, but an active person who has no choice but to express his homosexual desire with renaissance amity. Antonio is a melancholic figure who incorporates Bassanio into his own identity when he fails to mourn his love. The third chapter argues the reason of Leontes’ lunatic jealousy. While previous studies suggest his fear for female sexuality as the reason, this thesis asserts that Leontes’ jealousy comes from his unstable masculinity which results from his homosexual desires. Even though hysteria was regarded as feminine in the early modern, by investigating Edward Jorden’s A Brief Discourse of a Disease Called the Suffocation of the Mother (1603), this study discovers the possibility of male hysteria. Also, Leontes’ blame on his wife, Hermione, is explained with Freud’s hysteria and Rene Girard’s the triangle of desire. Leontes is then a hysterical figure who constantly tries to escape from his homosexual desire and displace it with heterosexual jealousy. The final chapter emphasizes how both characters’bodies express their homosexual behaviors. By suggesting bodies as sites in which their homosexual desires are physicalized, it proves that historical approach does not exclude psychological aspects and that psychoanalytic analysis does not ignore the social, ethical and political context of the work. The coexistence of both methods tells us that the pathological human body can function as a social criticism of the early modern England. ;본 연구는 윌리엄 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare)의 『베니스의 상인』(The Merchant of Venice, 1596)과 『겨울 이야기』(The Winter’s tale, 1610) 속 동성애적 욕망이 드러나는 방식을 “아포리안 호모섹슈얼리티”(Aporian Homosexuality)를 통해 분석한다. (A Brief Discourse of a Disease called the Suffocation of the Mother,
