Abstract
Despite modern science has steadily demonstrated evidence of monism in the mind-body relationship, a large number of lay people still stand for dualistic perspectives which lead to beliefs in immaterial soul and the afterlife. A handful of psychological studies dealing with the posthumous mind have focused on how much the participants attribute a normal person's mental capacity to the dead, or whether participants judge the dead can retain the mind they had when they were alive. The current study expands these findings aims to identify the characteristics that only the dead could have, namely the super-perceiving ability to obtain information beyond physical constraints. In Experiment 1, I examined whether the dead’s mind was regarded as a weakened form of the living's mind or as a soul which is not restricted by physical body and thus have transcendental super-perceiving ability. Participants evaluated an imaginary character’s mental capacities in life, dead, or persistent vegetative state including abilities of wishing and super-knowing of another individual’s current state. The results showed that, in terms of general mental capacity and wish, participants judged the dead had more capability than the PVS patient but possess lesser capability than alive. This result supports preceding research which showed the posthumous mind exists in a weakened form of the living mind. In the evaluation of our newly added super-perceiving ability, uniformly low ratings were found regardless of the imaginary individual’s biological state. This indicates that unlike a notion that the dead person has the ability to exceed physical time and space is not the common-sense belief. However, by conducting additional analysis, I found that the higher the religiosity participants had, the higher the capability of super-perceiving they attributed to the dead. It suggests that the dead’s super-perceiving capacity is appreciated via a religious belief. In Experiment 2, besides a person’s biological state (alive or dead), the personality (considerate or neglectful) was added as an independent variable in order to investigate the belief that a person’s specific mental traits continue even after death. Furthermore, unlike previous studies of the dead’s mind which mostly investigated whether the dead's mental functioning "maintains" the condition of his or her life, I explored whether the dead’s mind is evaluated to have the ability to update their states. In addition, participants judged the person’s extended wish and super-knowing questions related to the emotional, physical and occupational states of his fiancé as well as general mental capacity as in Experiment 1. The results again revealed the influence of participants’ religiosity in the evaluation of the postmortem agent’s super-perceiving capacity. Moreover, ratings on the dead’s possibility to remember fiancé’s birthday were higher when his antemortem personality was described as considerate than neglectful. This suggests that a person’s autobiographical characteristic affected to the perception of the person’s postmortem mind. However, the possibility of the dead’s ability to update new information was generally assessed to be low. The implications of this study are as follows. The mind of the dead is perceived (1) to be a limited form of the living’s mind, (2) to be for its transcendental ability only through religiosity, (3) to be unable to update new information, and (4) to maintain the autobiographical characteristics.;현대 과학이 심신관계의 일원론을 지지하는 증거를 꾸준히 입증했음에도 불구하고, 대다수의 일반인들은 여전히 영혼과 사후세계에 대한 믿음으로 표현되는 이원론적 관점을 견지하고 있다.
