Abstract
;This study examines the musical characteristics of the film ‘Titus(1999)’, which is composed by Elliot Goldenthal(1954~). Elliot Goldenthal grew up in the United States where classical music, jazz, rock and blues were combined in a multicultural environment. Thus, he is recognized for his wide range of musical spectrum, including Hollywood film industry as well as concert music for operas, plays and dance plays. He is also considered as an artist for his own unique styles of extreme experiments such as combining genres, studying special techniques, and combining orchestras with electronic sounds. Elliot Goldenthal integrated his musical style of decade into ‘Titus’, in order to musically portray the postmodern techniques that director Julie Taymor(1952~) used in his film to express the theme of ‘Human Violence Beyond the Times’. Therefore, in this study I will analyze the movie ‘Titus’ to find out how Goldenthal musically embodied the film’s themes and the director’s intentions in it. To achieve the purpose of this study, I first examined the music of postmodern films, as well as the life and work of Elliot Goldenthal, in order to find out his musical background and style. Also, I researched on the background of movie production to find out the intention of the director, Julie Taymor. To analyze it, I divided the plot of the movie into beginning, development, crisis, climax, and ending, and the musical functions according to the in-and-out of the music and the musical techniques accordingly.  Thus in the study, I analyzed that the music in ‘Titus’ used a method to blur the boundaries between diegetic and non-diegetic music to express the mixture of the feelings of reality and unreality experienced by Young Lucious, the character and the observer of the entire film. The music also had eclecticism style, which combines various genres from classical orchestral music, jazz heavy rock from the 1920-30s, to electro-music. They were all used to symbolize the characters, and mixed settings from the ancient to modern. In addition, there are four PANs in the movie that express the feelings and thoughts caused by external violence. To express the unique dreamlike colors and unrealism, the composer tuned the music in the PANs 1/4 lower, utilized electronic sources acoustically, or increased the reverberation to create a space with ringing sound. Moreover, the plot of the movie was supported by the repeated themes and motifs that represented the protagonist, Titus, as well as the psychology developed from “revenge”, the main theme of the plot. Elliot Goldenthal's ‘Titus’ was closely correlated with the director’s eclectic directing of postmodernism, and at the same time closely related to the structure of the film. I look forward to a series of systematic studies on Eliot Goldenthal's music in the future, and hope this study to be served as a basis for the systematization of Eliot Goldenthal's film music.
