Abstract
;The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of youth orchestra activity on middle and high school students' ability to emphasize. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 267 students in the first, second, and third grades of a middle school and in the first and second grades of a high school located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Based on the collected data, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA were conducted according to research questions and verified using post-test. The results of this study are as follows. First, it was found that the ability to emphasize of middle and high school students who experienced the youth orchestra activity was higher than those who did not experience the activity. Moreover, the students who experienced the youth orchestra activity showed higher level of ability to emphasize in general and its sub-domains of fantasy and emphatic concern than those who did not experience the activity. Second, it was found that the ability to emphasize of middle and high school students (n=143) who had experienced the youth orchestra activity was higher than average. In terms of the sub-domains, fantasy was significantly higher and personal distress was the lowest. Third, it was found that there was a difference in the ability to emphasize according to musical instruments played by the middle and high school students (n=143) who experienced the youth orchestra activity. Among the musical instrument groups, the students who played percussion instruments had the highest ability to emphasize and empathic concern was the highest among the sub-domains. Fourth, the majority of the individual variables of the middle and high school students who participated in this study (n=143) did not have significant associations with their ability to emphasize. The motivation of participation and activity frequency were significantly associated with the sub-domains, however, other individual variables such as gender, duration of participation, engagement in private lesson of the musical instruments and its frequency, participation in orchestra performance and its frequency were not significant. These results demonstrated that the experience of orchestra activity in adolescents could positively affect the middle and high school students’ ability to emphasize. Also, it showed that regardless of gender, duration of participation, or stage experience, the experience of the orchestra activity itself is important. As shown in this study and previous studies, the orchestra activity has positive effects on emotional development, aptitude development, and quality of life as well as the ability to emphasize for adolescent students. Activated orchestra activity improves students’ ability to emphasize, which is expected to reduce school violence through increased empathy and caring for others. Therefore, in order to allow adolescent students to restore their emotions and sociality through the orchestra activity, support for active orchestra activity is needed. For more adolescent students to be exposed to the orchestra activity, a proper environment for schools, the public educational institutes, should be established. Regarding the orchestra activity operation of a school, each school should be equipped with musical instruments sufficiently so that more students can experience the orchestra activity. The Ministry of Education should also actively fund the school environment for the orchestra activity. Furthermore, for continuous and vigorous orchestra activity, it is hoped that the local government and schools cooperate for the opportunity to students’ performance at a local level, which results in enjoying music in the students’ daily lives.
