박경리 『토지』를 바탕으로 한 무용창작작품 「경칩(驚蟄)」에 관한 연구

Abstract

근대시기에 이르러 산업화가 발달됨에 따라 경제활동을 통한 이윤 창출이 중요시 여겨지게 되면서 인간의 부, 권력, 지식을 향한 욕망이 점차 심화되었다. 그 결과 개인주의와 경쟁주의가 팽배해졌고 인간의 사고와 감성은 이기적이고 삭막하게 변질되었다. 이로 인해 인간의 삶이 영위되는 땅은 이익을 위한 물질적 수단으로서 약탈과 침략의 대상으로 전락하였으며, 특히 민족주의는 국가주의와 종족적 성향을 띠게 되면서 민족 간의 갈등과 대립을 심화시키는 요인이 되었다. 이러한 문제점을 인식한 사회는 하나의 해결책으로서 민족 간의 화합과 존중을 지향하며 자유, 관용, 평등, 개인의 권리를 기반으로 하는 시민적 민족주의(civic nationalism)를 화두로 삼고 있으며, 특히 한국의 민족주의는 1990년대에 시민적 민족주의의 흐름에 맞추어 포함하는 ‘열린 민족주의’ 담론이 제기되었다. 특히 그 기본 방향은 한국 민족주의가 중요시 여겼던 널리 인간 세상을 이롭게 하라는 홍익인간 이념과 맥락이 같다. 이처럼 우리의 고유의 민족정신은 오늘날 세계화 시대가 추구하는 인류애 정신과 맞닿아 있으며 세계적으로 다시금 재조명 받고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 박경리의 소설 『토지』(1969 - 1994)는 한국의 민족정신의 특성을 다양하게 드러내고 있는 문학작품으로서 민족 해방을 위해 분투하는 민중들의 진솔한 삶의 이면을 다룬 방대한 서사를 통해 우리 민족이 지녀왔던 생명사상과 공동체의식에 대해 전달하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 한국 발레 역시도 한국의 고유의 문화와 정신을 반영한 민족 발레로 창작되어 왔으며, 세계에 한국 민족 정신의 숭고함과 아름다움을 널리 알리고 있다. 따라서 본 연구자는 무용창작작품「경칩(驚蟄)」(2018)을 안무하여 경쟁적인 현대사회 속에서 평화를 지향하는 한국 고유의 민족정신의 회복에 대한 내용을 발레로써 나타내고자 하였다. 이에 작품을 총 3장으로 나누어 구성하여 각 장면에 따라 주제 및 내용, 공간사용과 이동경로 및 움직임, 오브제와 의상의 의미로 분석하였다. 1장은 현세대의 인간이 땅을 통해 순수하고 평안한 민족정신을 기반으로 민족 정체성을 찾아가는 모습을 나타내었다. 이에 따라 무대 상수 앞쪽에 설정한 평안의 공간에는 민족 정체성을 상징하는 항아리와 그 안에 아름다운 민족정신을 상징하는 흙을 담은 오브제를 위치시켰다. 민족의 순수함을 강조하는 청명한 푸른색 조명과 땅의 애틋하고 그리운 감정을 나타내는 따뜻한 앰버 조명을 사용하였으며, 한국 전통악기의 여백이 돋보이는 선율을 사용하여 한국 민족의 고고한 기개와 위상을 나타내었다. 무용수는 주로 항아리와 흙을 응시하며 신체 부위를 뻗거나, 땅과 가까이 신체레벨을 낮춘 상태를 유지하여 땅에 담긴 민족정신의 소중한 가치를 내재화하며 자신의 정체성을 확고히 하는 모습을 표현하였다. 2장은 사회의 왜곡된 가치관으로부터 민족 정체성을 위협받는 인간의 모습을 나타내었다. 이에 무대 전체공간을 위협의 공간으로 설정하여 왜곡된 가치관을 상징하는 회색 틀을 두었고, 싸늘한 분위기를 연출하는 흰색 탑 조명과 길 조명, 푸른색 조명과 아지랑이 무늬 고보조명, 흰색 조명의 스트로보 현상을 통해 이기적 사고로 점철된 사회의 존재와 혼란스러운 주체의 심리를 시각적으로 강조하였다. 또한 음악은 경보음과 같은 워낭소리와 북소리, 그리고 음산하게 늘어지는 생황소리를 사용하여 갈등과 대립이 만연한 사회의 위협적 분위기에 효과를 더하였다. 이때 무용수는 무게중심을 이탈하거나 팔을 빠르고 거칠게 내리치는 움직임을 통해 흔들리는 정체성을 표현하였으며, 신체레벨을 순간적으로 무너뜨리거나 빠르게 회전함으로써 인간의 심리가 무력감과 혼돈에 빠지는 모습을 드러내었다. 이후 무용수는 항아리를 회색 틀에다 가져다두면서 팔을 위협의 공간을 향해 긴장감 있게 뻗어내고 상체를 뒤로 젖히거나 신체레벨을 낮추고 상체를 무겁게 숙이는 동작으로 저항과 좌절의 이중 심리를 나타내었다. 3장은 갈등상태에 놓여있던 인간이 왜곡된 가치관으로부터 벗어나 민족정신을 회복하고 평화를 되찾기 위해 의지와 용기를 발휘하는 모습을 나타내었다. 무대 중앙에 낮은 조도의 푸른색 조명과 나무 모양의 고보조명을 비추어 민족정신을 되찾아가는 강인한 의지를 강조하였고, 피아노의 역동적 선율을 사용하여 이기적 사고로부터 벗어나고자 애쓰는 용기를 박진감 있게 표현하였다. 무용수는 신체레벨을 높은 상태로 유지하면서 팔을 뻗으며 힘차게 도약하거나 다리를 강하게 차는 움직임을 통해 이기적 사고로부터 벗어나 자신의 정체성을 되찾으려는 강한 다짐을 보여준 뒤, 무대 중앙 앞쪽에 설정된 평화의 공간으로 두개의 오브제를 포개어 강하게 밀어내는 동작으로 이동하며 위치를 옮긴다. 이를 통해 지식, 이념의 사고체계와 이타적 정신이 균형과 조화를 이룰 때에 인간은 이기적 욕망으로부터 자유로워지고 인류의 평화를 지향할 수 있게 됨을 상징적으로 나타내었다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 무용창작작품「경칩(驚蟄)」(2018)을 통해 남을 배려하고 생명을 소중히 여기는 민족 고유의 정서를 상기하고 민족정체성을 재정립하는 것의 중요성을 전하고자 하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 이기적 욕망에 의해 물질적이고 경쟁적으로 변한 사회의 통속적 사고로부터 벗어나, 민족 간의 화합과 보편적 가치를 추구하는 것이 곧 평화와 공존을 지향하는 세계시민의식을 갖는 것임을 알리고자 하였다. ;The capitalist society recognizing private ownership of goods as the basic right of members of society puts values on creation of profits based on economic activities and kindles excessive obsession with wealth, power and knowledge. As a result, individualism and competition started to prevail, while human thought and emotions became more and more selfish and intolerant. Consequently, the land where human life is supposed to maintain transformed into an object of plunder and invasion as a material means for seeking profits and became a factor aggravating conflicts and confrontations among nations and states. Recognizing these problems, as a solution, the world focuses on civic nationalism aiming at harmony and respect among nations based on freedom, tolerance, equality and individual rights. Since the basic directionality of civic nationalism coincides with our country’s foundation ideology of “Hongikingan,” humanitarianism to give benefits for all humans, which was highly valued by Korean nationalism, and is in line with love for humanity pursued by the age of globalization, our intrinsic nationalism is back into the spotlight worldwide. From this perspective, 『Toji』(1969-1994), the novel of Park Kyung-ni is a literary work displaying features of Korean nationalistic spirit in a diverse manner, and conveys life respect thought and community spirit that our nations have kept throughout the history, through voluminous narratives dealing with the other side of real life of folks struggling for nation’s liberation. With this in mind, through a dance creative work 「Gyungchip(驚蟄)」(2018) meaning “End of hibernation”, this study intended to deliver altruistic and beautiful spirit of our nations, worthy of restoration, with a view to seeking peace of humanity in the modern society with fierce competition. For the purpose of this, the work was composed of three parts, and each scene was analyzed in terms of theme, content, space use, moving route, movement, meaning of objects and costume. Chapter 1 expressed the aspect of which the subject recovers national identity through the land based on pure and peaceful national spirit. For this, in the space of Peace set up in front of Stage Left, I used a jar symbolizing the subject’s identity and soil suggesting beautiful national spirit inside the jar as an object. As for the lighting, I employed a bright green tone stressing our nation’s purity as well as a warm amber lighting to reveal ardent and nostalgic feelings for the land. By using melody highlighting leisurely hues of a traditional Korean musical instrument to express lofty spirit and status of our nations. The dancer gazes at the jar and soil with a straight look most of the time, stretches out her body and maintains her body level low close to the ground to internalize precious values of national spirit imbued with the land and solidify her identity. Chapter 2 manifests the aspect of which the subject’s identity is threatened by distorted values of the society. By setting up the entire stage as a space of threat, a gray frame symbolizing distorted values was made. To visually emphasize the existence of threatening society full of egoism and the subject’s chaotic psychology, for this frosty mood, I utilized white top lighting and street lighting as well as greenish lighting and haze gobo lighting for the stroboscopic effect. As for music, by using cowbell like an alarm sound, drum sound and sound of Saenghwang, traditional Korean wind instrument, it enhanced effects of menacing atmosphere of the society full of conflicts and confrontations. Here, the dancer gets out of center of gravity and strikes her arms in a quick and rough way. With this movement, the dancer wanted to express her identity shaken by distorted values. By suddenly falling down her body level to the ground and quickly spinning around, the subject reveals how much she is confused and helpless. Later, the dancer shows her dual psychology of resistance and frustration through the movements of putting the jar in the gray frame, stretching her arms heavily towards the threatening space, bending her upper body backwards, lowering the body level and stooping down her upper body. Chapter 3 expresses the aspect of which the subject gets out of the distorted values and displays courage and a strong will to recover altruistic national spirit and peace. By shining greenish lighting with low intensity of illumination and a tree gobo lighting on the center of the stage, the subject’s strong will to recover national spirit was accentuated. The use of dynamic melody of piano expresses the subject’s firm will full of liveliness to escape from selfish thinking. The dancer keeps her body level to a high position, leaps full of energy stretching her arms and kicks in the air with her legs with strength to show her strong will to recover her identity escaping from selfish thoughts. Later, she folds two objects while powerfully pushing them to the space of Peace established in the front part of the center of stage and moves her position. This movement symbolically expresses that humans can be liberated from selfish desire and pursue peace of humanity when they achieve balance and harmony in knowledge, thinking system of ideology and altruistic spirit. Thus, this study aims to people of altruistic emotion considering others and valuing life that our nations have been keeping throughout the history, through a dance creative work 「Gyungchip(驚蟄)」(2018). Moreover, it intends to proclaim that we can reestablish correct identity and keep mature democracy by escaping from the conventional thinking of the society transformed into materialism and competition by egoism and pursuing harmony and universal values among nations.
