The purpose of this study is to investigate the modernity of disgust that appear in the novels of Na Do-hyang. The hatred in Na’s novels symbolizes the pure modern figure that modern entities attempt to configure. Furthermore, based on self-loathing by discovering unmodern properties that the modern entities disgust, they break up the pure modernity and reconfigure a introspective modernity. Therefore, disgust can be explained as being ambivalent in that it shows a negative form that hierarchically divides that which is modern and that is not modern, and an introspective form that realizes the inconsistency of such hierarchy. Modernity depicted in Korean literature in the 1920s takes on a pure and complete appearance. It is also accompanied by a disgust for that which is not modern. Here, we can find the correlation of literature in the 1920s and the emotion of hatred. Disgust is a reaction to dangers, pollution and infection that can hurt the body. There are also times that it is projected on objects that would not actually cause dangers, pollution or infection. Disgust projected at this time may be viewed as being problematic in that it is based on the ranking and subjugating of subjects of disgusts and entities. Disgust in 1920s literature separated and created a hierarchy of those that are modern and that which are not, and such modes of disgust could also be seen in the novels of Na Do-hyang. However, the difference of Na’s novels is that it goes beyond disgust for the configuration of pure modernity and exhibits introspective self-loathing that makes reconfiguration of realistic modernity possible. Modernity is depicted as ‘true self’, ‘true art’ and ‘true love’ in Na Do-hyang’s novels. Past studies had a tendency to analyze the modernity of Na Do-hyang’s novels focusing on the romance of Na Do-hyang. This study, however, is unique in that Na Do-hyang realized the impossibility of ‘true self’, ‘true art’ and ‘true love’, and ultimately reconfigured modern principle of flexible self, everyday art, and creative love. In Chapter Ⅱ, the process of discovering the concrete appearance of modernity was analyzed based on the objects that were excluded for an entity to configure modernity. The disgust of the characters that looked to move forward to pure modernity by excluding feudalism, materialism and physicality is based on ranking and subjugating those that are not modern. The unmodern characters are depicted as pre-modern parents, patriarchal husband, materialistic artists and students studying abroad, and gisaeng (Korean geisha) and female students that focus on physical love. They are compared to animals (Part A), swindlers (Part B), and lewd women (Part C), and the disgust are exposed through the relationship with them. The modern characters conflict with such characters to make themselves a purely modern entity. Chapter Ⅲ examines the introspective modernity that appears targeting self-loathing of modern entities. Based on the failure of modern ideals, the modern entities find feudalism, materialism and physicality found within their inner selves and feel a self-loathing. Moreover, they become aware and accept the fact that the reason why modernity was impossible was not only because of others they disgusted, but also because of themselves. The modern entities faced the reality that they perceived and recognized that the ideal modernity in the form of pure modernity was impossible, and reconfigured this into an introspective and realistic figure. The disgust of characters found in the novels of Na Do-hyang can be said to be ultimately related to introspection on modernity. The transformation from disgust to those who contaminate ideal pure modernity to self-loathing highlights the realistic aspect of Na’s novels in that it broke down the ideology of pure modernism. In addition, the appearance of retrospective modernity reconfigured based on self-loathing is significant in that it exhibits modernity of the characters through disgust. Unlike the enlightenment literature of the 1910s, the modernity of 1920s literature that searched for another path became clear through analysis on the disgust of the characters. The significance of this study can be found in that it examined the modernity of the disgust reconfigured as introspective modernity by disbanding pure modernity based on this.-
