Abstract
Dionne Brand’s novel, What We All Long For (2005) captures immigrant subjects’ (un)belonging within the spatial scope of Toronto. While the cityspace of Toronto appears to be an open society that accommodates people of diverse backgrounds and identities, the novel reveals different degrees of marginalization that underlie the society. Against the biopower, which includes/excludes, categorizes, and defines each population according to race and ethnicity, the second-generation Torontonians endeavor to reshape and retrieve rightful ownership over the cityspace. In my paper, I intend to restore Quy’s role and significance by showing his relationship with other characters and politics of Toronto through Giorgio Agamben’s notion of “bare life” and “inclusive exclusion.” This is not to say that my discussion will be limited to Quy; rather, my aim is to provide a more comprehensive interpretation of how the racist mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion occur in the cityspace of Toronto by drawing on the concept of biopower. In the first chapter, I introduce the theoretical framework of my paper, which is indebted to Michel Foucault and Agamben’s key arguments on biopolitics. As modern states function in the biopower mode, governing bodies separate lives to be promoted from disposable lives, ultimately “race” becoming the most prominent criteria by which the population is hierarchized. Against the work of biopower and its resultant social structure, I suggest drifting as a motile and creative practice, a recurrent idea in many of Brand’s works. Brand’s idea of drifting emerges in response to diasporic and immigrant subjects’ prolonged displacement from space, which I conceptualize as an intercorporeal practice by adopting Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s “body schema” and Michel de Certeau’s “act of walking” as core ideas. In the second chapter, I analyze different peripheral groups and the spaces each group occupies: Quy and a refugee camp, first-generation visible minorities and ethnicized spaces, and young black men and streets, prison, and ghetto. The hostility of public spaces dominated by the white population ousts non-white immigrant characters to peripheral or ethnicized spaces. Then again, it is in these spaces that they confirm social belonging and recover ownership over their bodies. Thus, I concentrate my investigation on how marginalized characters cope with the given condition, making the best use of peripheral and ethnicized spaces. In the final chapter, I explore how the second-generation visible minority characters use drifting as a way to imprint their presence on the cityspace and disalienate themselves from the public spaces. Their goal is not necessarily to seek belonging, but to reshape and redefine the cityspace. Carla’s cycling, Oku’s rehabituation as a cool poet, Tuyen’s installation of the lubaio, and the graffiti crew’s mural painting are all individual practices of drifting that also contribute to the diversity of the cityspace. Also, by forming a porous community across differences, they remake the cityspace into a less hostile milieu in which they can feel at home. Overall, it is the teeming plurality of identities and movements of struggles that are central to the novel.;디온 브랜드(Dionne Brand)의 소설 『우리 모두가 염원하는 것(What We All Long For)』(2005)은 이민자들의 (비)소속(un-belonging)을 토론토라는 공간적 범위 안에서 그려내고 있다. 뀌와 난민상태에 대한 깊이 있는 분석을 위해 조르지오 아감벤(Giorgio Agamben)의 “벌거벗은 인간”(bare life), “예외적 상태”(the state of exception), “포함적 배제”(inclusive exclusion)의 개념을 빌려온다.
