Abstract
Anchee Min is a Chinese-American author who is known for her vivid depictions of the relationships between the characters in her novels. This is especially true for her novel Pearl of China (2010), a novel of historical fiction that reinterprets the life and influence of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Pearl Sydenstricker Buck through the relationship with a fictional best friend named Willow Yee. Using Emmanuel Lévinas’ theory of the self and the Other, the historical backdrop of China in the twentieth century, and Pearl S. Buck’s unique position in it, this paper argues that Willow and Pearl’s relationship in Pearl of China depicts the possibility of a positive relationship transcending the boundaries of the self and the other. Their relationship becomes the strength in defining themselves and maintaining each other’s identity against traditional patriarchy of the Qing and Nationalist China and the totalizing forces of communist China under Mao. Willow sees God’s face in the face of Pearl, giving her the strength to keep her faith and her identity during hardship. In chapter I, this paper looks into Anchee Min’s historical novels to understand the importance of Min as an author and the value of Pearl of China as a work of historical fiction. Then I define and compare the significance of different concepts of the self and other and the important concepts in Lévinas that will be used during the course of this paper. Chapter II explores the process of how Willow Desires the exterior, different from the needs of her interiority, and examines Pearl’s part in this process. I explore the beginnings of Willow and Pearl’s face to face relationship, and how Willow and Pearl are able to understand the responsibility they have towards each other. In chapter III, this paper examines how Willow and Pearl’s face to face relationship counteracts the traditional patriarchal society’s efforts to confine Willow’s existence into a socially isolating role and silence Pearl’s voice as an author. Chapter IV compares Willow’s existence as a religious being to the purely political life of her husband, Dick Lin. I observe the exploitative relationship between Dick Lin and Mao Tse-tung in the novel as a point of contrast with the religious bond that Willow and Pearl share. Willow sees the face of God in Pearl’s face, and this is the religious bond that keeps Pearl from forgetting Willow and Willow from acquiescing to the propaganda that defames Pearl as a cultural imperialist. More importantly, I argue that Willow’s religious bond with Pearl enables her to keep her identity and faith as a Christian against the totalizing forces of Maoist China.
