로버트 마더웰(Robert Motherwell)의 회화에 나타난 문학적 요소

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine various aspects of literary elements in the works of Robert Motherwell (1915-1991). Motherwell, who was a writer and critic at the time of American abstract expressionism, established his own view of abstract art. As the interest of the American art world in abstract art tended to focus on the technical issues highlighted by formalists, he developed works that freely crossed the boundaries of art and literature on the basis of his broad knowledge of European modern history. By coexisting purely pictorial and literary elements, he attempted a more essential approach to abstract art. However, many previous works on Motherwell discussed his works as simply an exceptional tendency of abstract expressionist art, given that he did not establish his own abstract style, or were confined to specific series or themes. Shedding light on the point that literary elements consistently appeared throughout Motherwell's works, this study explored his work from various angles. First, this study examined the work of Motherwell embracing letters on an abstract painting. He focused on the European modernism art having developed through free exchange with literature, and positively used letters on the painting as a mediator of literary elements. Moreover, he attempted the appropriation of texts by applying collage technique to a painting . Through the method to attach pieces of papers with printed commercial texts to a painting highlighting the technique of abstract expressionist painting, he tried to blur the boundaries between image and real world as well as the boundaries between creation and appropriation. Furthermore, his works brought literary motifs into the painting by drawing concrete shapes or giving suggestion. Motherwell's works, on the other hand, were also expanded to expressions of contemporary American social and political contents. He expressed a critique of the Spanish civil war on a canvas composed of abstract forms. In the post-war American context of a powerful anti-communist system, he aimed to situate abstract art on the horizon of life through his images embedded in a narrative, a factor of literature. As such, Robert Motherwell at the height of American abstract expressionism art, suggested various works that coexisted abstract paintings and literary elements which were regarded as mutually exclusive by formalist modernists. In doing so, he went beyond the aesthetic norms of closed formalism and provided a variety of potentials to American abstract art. Therefore, his works have been evaluated as a representative example exploring another possibility of abstract art, attracting more attention in the so-called 'post-modernism' era. The significance of this study is to redefine the artist's art historical position, which has not been fully addressed by examining the literary elements of Motherwell's works from various angles.;본 논문은 로버트 마더웰(Robert Motherwell, 1915-1991)의 작업에서 문학적인 요소가 나타나는 다양한 양상을 살펴본 연구이다. 마더웰은 미국 추상표현주의가 형성되는 시기에 작가 겸 비평가로서 추상미술에 대한 독자적인 시각을 확립하였다. 그는 추상미술에 대한 미국 미술계의 관심이 형식주의자들이 강조한 기법적인 문제에 치중되는 경향을 보이자, 유럽 모더니즘 역사에 대한 폭넓은 지식을 바탕으로 미술과 문학의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나드는 작업을 전개하였다. 그는 순수한 회화적 요소와 문학적인 요소들을 공존시키는 작업을 통해 추상미술에 대한 보다 본질적인 접근을 시도하고자 한 것이다. 그러나 마더웰에 관한 기존의 연구는 그가 고유한 추상 양식을 확립하지 않았다는 점에서 추상표현주의 미술의 예외적인 경향으로 거론되거나 특정 연작, 주제에 관련된 연구가 대부분이었다. 이에 본 논문은 마더웰의 작업 전반에 일관되게 나타나는 특징으로 문학적인 요소가 발견되는 측면에 초점을 맞추고, 이에 근거하여 그의 작업을 다양한 각도에서 살펴보았다. 우선 마더웰이 문자를 추상 화면에 수용한 작업들을 살펴보았다. 그는 유럽 모더니즘 미술이 문학과의 자유로운 교류를 통해 전개되었다는 점에 주목하면서, 형식주의 모더니스트들이 미술의 자율성을 오염시키는 것으로 여겨 화면에서 배제하고자 했던 문학적 요소와 그 매개체로서의 문자를 화면에 적극 수용하였다. 또한 그는 회화적 기법으로 이루어진 화면에 콜라주 기법을 통해 텍스트를 차용하는 방법을 시도하기도 했다. 그는 추상표현주의 회화의 기법이 강조된 화면 위에 상업적인 텍스트가 인쇄된 신문지, 담배 포장지, 우편 봉투 등의 종이 조각을 붙이는 방식을 통해 창조와 차용이라는 서로 배치되는 제작 방법 간의 경계 뿐 아니라, 이미지와 현실세계의 경계를 허물고자 한 것이다. 나아가 그의 작업은 평면성과 색채가 강조된 화면에 구체적인 형상을 그려 넣는 방법 등을 사용하여 문학적 소재를 화면에 끌어들였다. 한편, 마더웰의 작업은 동시대 미국의 사회·정치적 내러티브를 표현하는 차원으로 확대되기도 하였다. 그는 추상적 형태들로 이루어진 화면에 스페인 내전을 비판하는 내용을 담고자 하였다. 강력한 반공체제였던 전후 미국에서 그는 문학의 요소인 내러티브가 함축된 이미지를 통해 추상 미술을 삶의 지평에 위치시키고자 한 것이다. 이렇듯, 미국 추상표현주의 미술이 대두되던 시기에 작가로서 등장한 로버트 마더웰은 형식주의 모더니스트들에게 상호배타적인 것으로 간주되어 추상회화에 수용하는 것이 경계시 되었던 문학적 요소를 공존시키는 다양한 작업을 보여주었다. 이를 통해 그는 폐쇄적인 형식주의의 미학적 규범을 넘어서 미국 추상미술에 다양한 가능성을 제공하였고, 이로 인해 그의 작업은 추상미술의 또 다른 가능성을 탐구한 대표적인 예로 평가되어 소위 ‘모더니즘 이후’ 시대에 더욱 주목받고 있다. 본 논문은 마더웰의 작업에서 문학적인 요소가 나타나는 측면을 다양한 각도로 살펴봄으로써 그동안 제한적으로 논의되었던 작가의 미술사적 위치를 재정립하였다는데 의의가 있다.
