Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze how millennial generation's self-esteem and psychological independence from parents influence compensatory consumption behavior by giving attention to their life cycle while millennial generation are emerging as a key consumer group. To fulfill the purpose, first, it has been checked that there are differences in self-esteem, psychological independence and compensatory consumption behavior among each social demographic group to see how their self-esteem and psychological independence influence compensatory consumption. A survey was conducted with millennial generation who were single, 19 to 34 years old with more than one surviving parent, and the responses of 418 people were analyzed. After checking reliability and validity of each criterion, t-test, one-way ANOVA, posteriori tests and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed. The summary of results is as follow. First, as a result on the analysis on self-esteem depending on subjects’ sociodemographic characteristic, positive self-esteem has shown a meaningful difference in parents’ economic level, occupations and academic background. Negative self-esteem has shown a meaningful difference in the characteristics of gender, educational level, occupation, economic level of parents, and monthly personal income. Second, in the analysis of the differences in the factor of psychological independence from parents by social demographic characteristics, there are meaningful differences in the characteristics of gender, educational level, monthly personal income among the subjects of psychological independence under good relationship with their parents, and also meaningful differences are shown in the characteristics of gender, educational level and cohabitation with their parents among the subjects who are psychologically independent under conflict with their parents. Third, in the analysis of the differences of compensatory consumption behavior by social demographic characteristics, there are significant differences on both types of self-compliment and self-consolation by gender. Fourth, the analysis on how millennial generation's social demographic characteristics, self-esteem and psychological independence from parents affects self-compliment compensatory consumption behavior suggests that stronger influence has been given as the order of positive self-esteem, independence under conflict, independence under a good relationship with subjects' parents. In other words, to those who have higher positive self-esteem and are less psychologically independent under conflict with parents or a good relationship, more self-compliment compensatory consumption behavior has been shown. Fifth, the analysis on how millennial generation's social demographic characteristics, self-esteem and psychological independence from parents affects self-consolation compensatory consumption behavior suggests that stronger influence has been given as the order of negative self-esteem, psychological independence in the circumstance of conflicting with one's parents, gender, income level of his or her parents. More self-consolation compensatory consumption behavior would be shown to those who are female, with higher negative self-esteem, less independent under conflict with parents, and belong to the middle class in economic level. This research suggests that many of millennial generation still have close relationship with their parents after being adults and their psychological desire to be supported and encouraged by their parents are related to the behavior of compensatory consumption for self-complimenting and self-consoling. There is a meaning that this study shows dualistic self-esteem of positive and negative one unlike single perspective one and regards a developmental psychological factor as compensatory consumption.
