현대인의 강박적 심리와 해소에 관한 표현 연구

Abstract

The people in the contemporary society seemed to be bound by a fixed course like a squirrel running around in a circle. The development of civilization had enriched our lives but suppressed contemporary people to preserve and develop the society. The competition has intensified in the contemporary society where put much value on efficiency like the characteristics of capitalism that has evolved along with the contemporary society and also, people falling behind were easily written off as failure. It has appeared that contemporary people have competed endlessly and taken good care of their appearances as required by the society in order to survive in the rat race, rather than head for what they want. A variety of responsibilities and expectation on the contemporary people in such rat race have suppressed in regardless of their free will as individuals. The public tendency in demanding excessive perfection for success in the competitive society has become a trigger for obsessive compulsion for contemporary people that they should surpass others in everything. The obsessive mind and suppressed structure of society were symbolized as ‘Grid’, considering the phases of the times. The repetitive format which is visual characteristic of Grid and closure of closed space stood for repressed mind of contemporary people. As the square of Grid has spread out solidly and uniformly so that there will be no means of escape, it put mental pressure. In this study, high-rise buildings with such obsessive Grid structure with all competition in the contemporary society were chosen as object and interpreted in a way that it represents competitive lifestyle urged by the society as psychological frame to suppress contemporary people as well as repressed mind of contemporary people. Also, it aimed to break up Grid structure through this study so that suppressed contemporary people could feel liberated. This paper focused on repressive social culture in the rat race and relieve repressed mind of contemporary people for success through visual expression. Thus, the image of high-rise buildings were used, as they’re results of culture of achievement-oriented contemporary society. This study explained suppressed structure of society and repressed mind of contemporary people with Grid and produced 7 drawings that dismantle repetitive Grid format of the high-rise building. It tried to induce dissolution of repressed mind of contemporary people through the high-rise building’s format that is consequently disassembled.;주위를 둘러보면 높은 건물들 사이로 매일의 일정에 맞춰 바쁘게 살아가는 사람들이 보인다. 출퇴근길의 버스와 지하철은 치열하게 하루하루를 살아가는 수많은 직장인들과 학생들로 가득하다. 오늘날 현대사회를 살아가는 사람들을 보면 다람쥐가 쳇바퀴를 돌듯 정해진 코스에 따라 살아가고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 좋은 학교를 가기 위해 경쟁하고, 좋은 회사에 취직하기 위해 경력을 쌓고, 내 집을 마련하기 위해 일개미처럼 평생을 일한다. 자신의 삶의 가치를 어디에 둘지 고민하기보다 높은 학벌, 좋은 직장, 값비싼 집을 갖는 것이 성공이라 여기며 살아간다. 문명의 발전은 우리 삶을 풍요롭게 만들었지만 사회 유지와 발전을 위해 현대인을 억압하기도 한다. 현대사회와 함께 성장한 자본주의의 성질과 마찬가지로 효율성을 중시하는 현대사회에서 경쟁은 나날이 심화되고 있고 경쟁에서 뒤처지는 사람은 낙오자처럼 여겨진다. 현대인은 자신이 원하는 삶의 모습을 향해 나아가고 있다기보다는 치열한 사회에서 살아남기 위해 끊임없이 경쟁하고 사회의 필요에 의해 자신의 모습을 가꾸며 살아가고 있는 것 같다. 현대와 같은 무한경쟁시대에서 현대인들은 성적과 경력뿐 아니라 거의 모든 방면에서 불가능할 정도로 완벽해지길 요구받는다. 다방면에서 출중해야 하는 현대인들은 성공적으로 살아남기 위해 동아리나 교우관계를 자신의 미래와 결부지어 결정하고 취미마저 자기소개서에 도움이 될 만한 것으로 고른다. 경쟁사회에서 과도하게 성공에 가까운 완벽을 요구하는 사회풍조는 현대인들을 더욱 억압하고 무엇이든 남보다 잘해야 한다는 집착적인 강박을 부추긴다. 현대인은 경쟁에서 이기고 성공을 쟁취하기 위해 끊임없이 자신을 옭아맨다. 너무나도 치열하고 바쁘게 흘러가는 현대사회의 흐름 속에서 현대인은 따라야 할 일과 해야 할 것이 수없이 많다. 무한경쟁사회에서 현대인에게 주어지는 다양한 책임과 기대는 개인에게 자신의 자유의지와 관계없는 억압으로 다가온다. 자본의 효율성을 극대화하려는 현대사회에서 인간마저 가치증식을 위한 소모품처럼 변해버렸다. 경쟁은 자본주의의 기본원리지만 금융위기 이후 현실은 자유경쟁을 넘어선 무한경쟁시대가 되어버렸다. 대기업 취직, 고가의 아파트를 갖는 것은 인생의 성공처럼 여겨지지만 그것을 성취하기 위해서는 쉼 없이 경력을 쌓고, 경쟁하고, 일해야 한다. 본인은 이러한 시대상황을 보며 현대인의 강박적 심리와 억압적 사회구조를 ‘그리드(Grid)’로 상징하였다. 그리드가 가진 시각적 특성인 반복적 형태와 닫힌 공간으로 인한 답답함은 현대인의 억압적 심리를 잘 보여준다. 또한 그리드의 사각형은 빠져나갈 구멍이 없는 것처럼 견고하고 일률적으로 펼쳐져 있어 심리적인 압박을 준다. 본 연구에서는 성취지향적이며 경쟁주의적인 현대사회구조로 인하여 현대인들이 갖게 되는 사회부과적 완벽심리에 대한 문제의식을 가지고 현대인들의 완벽에 대한 비정상적인 집착적 강박을 없애고자 하였다. 폐쇄적 시각적 특성을 가진 그리드를 통해 억압적 사회구조와 현대인의 강박적 심리상태를 설명하고 강박적 그리드 구조를 가졌으며 모든 현대사회의 경쟁이 일어나는 장소인 고층건물을 조형매체로, 이것이 현대인을 억압하는 심리적 프레임으로써 사회로부터 부과된 경쟁적인 삶의 방식과 그로 인한 현대인들의 억압적 심리상태로 해석하였다. 연구자는 작품을 통해 무한경쟁시대의 억압적 사회문화에 주목하여 시각적 표현을 통해 현대인들의 성공을 위한 강박적 심리상태를 해소하고자 하였으므로 고층건물의 반복적인 그리드 형태를 해체하는 드로잉 작품 7점을 제작했다.
