In recent years, several types of implantable devices have been reported in the research literature. Some of these devices, such as pacemakers, have already been widely used. Because most implantable devices use a battery as their power source, they need to be surgically replaced after a few years. Therefore, extending the longevity of implantable devices has become an important issue. This paper proposes three design methods to increase the service life of implantable devices. First, we propose a system level hybrid functional- and power modeling methodology for implantable devices. This model supports predicting the behaviors of each sub-block, which operates in a different signal domain. It allows analyzing power generation and consumption together, and managing power dynamically. Therefore, in the early stages of the system design process, designers can consider various specifications under limited power conditions. We describe how to make and use the model by using a closed-loop seizure controller. Next, we consider an on-chip oscillator as a clock source because on-chip oscillators usually consume less power than off-chip oscillators, such as crystal oscillators. However, owing to the low accuracy of on-chip oscillators, many researchers have reported methods to improve accuracy. These methods tend to undercut the merits of low-power on-chip oscillators. Therefore, we analyzed the performance variance of epileptic seizure detectors according to frequency errors and found that typical on-chip oscillators without error compensation circuitry could support tolerable detection performance. These results could be used as guidelines to include an on-chip oscillator in other low-power implantable devices. Lastly, we suggest using an energy harvester to replace life-limited batteries. We used a frequency-up-converting impact-based piezoelectric energy harvester. An equivalent circuit model for the energy harvester was developed for field use. The circuit model allows describing behaviors in realistic vibration environments. The equivalent circuit model was verified through a comparison between model simulation and experimental results. We designed and implemented analog front-end circuits of a closed-loop seizure controller, which were powered by the harvester. Finally, the performance of the seizure controller was evaluated under the assumption that the controller dealt with the data processed by the harvester-powered analog front-end circuits. The results show the promising potential of the harvester as an alternative power source for implantable devices.;최근 다양한 체내 삽입형 의료기기들이 연구되고 있으며, 이미 일부 의료기기들은 실용화되고 있다.
