영화 〈로빈 후드의 모험, 1938〉에 나타난 에리히 코른골트의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 영화 〈로빈 후드의 모험(The Adventures of Robin Hood), 1938〉에 나타난 작곡가 에리히 볼프강 코른골트(Erich Wolfgang Korngold, 1897∼1957)의 음악적 기법과 특징을 통해 영화음악의 기능을 밝히는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 영화 〈로빈 후드의 모험〉이 개봉된 당시 할리우드 초기 영화음악의 흐름과 에리히 볼프강 코른골트의 생애와 작품세계를 앞서 살펴본 후 영화의 이야기 전개를 따라 각 장면별로 삽입된 음악들을 분석하였다. 음악 분석 결과, 에리히 볼프강 코른골트는 등장인물을 중심으로 전개되는 영화 이야기에 맞춰 오페라 기법인 라이트모티프 기법을 이용하여 인물중심의 음악적 구조를 이루었으며, 화면 속 인물의 동작과 음악을 일치시키고자 미키 마우징 기법을 활용하였다. 그는 화면의 안과 밖을 넘나드는 음악으로 장면을 전환하였고, 장면에 생략된 시간을 선율의 진행으로 결합하며 영화를 전개하였다. 또한 음악을 통해 영화의 시대적, 공간적 배경을 연상케 하였으며, 기존에 존재하는 곡을 인물 모티프에 차용하여 등장인물의 성격을 강화하였다. 본 논문은 음악 분석을 통해 에리히 볼프강 코른골트의 음악적 기법이 영화에서 다양한 기능(인물 상징의 기능, 화면의 동작과 상태를 표현하는 기능, 내재음악과 외재음악의 기능, 영화의 전개를 돕는 기능, 연상적 기능)으로 작용한다는 점을 밝힐 수 있었다. 따라서 본 논문의 결론은 에리히 볼프강 코른골트의 음악이 영화 안에서 핵심적인 역할을 하며, 영화음악의 기능을 정립했다는 점이다. 이러한 점에서 본 연구가 에리히 볼프강 코른골트의 음악 연구와 영화 〈로빈 후드의 모험〉을 비롯한 할리우드 초기 영화음악 분석에 기여하기를 바란다.;The purpose of this study is to clarify the function of film music through focusing on the musical techniques and characteristics of the composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold(1897〜1957) in the film ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood(1938)’. Prior to analyzing the music of the film, this study highlights the flows of the early film music in Hollywood and the works of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. As a result of the analysis of the music, Erich Wolfgang Korngold achieved a character-based musical structure through ‘Leitmotif technique’, which is Opera technique, in accordance with the story development based on characters in the film. He used ‘Mickey Mousing technique’ in the film in order to match the movement of characters on the screen with the music. Also, He switched scenes into and out of the screen, and combined the elapsed times in the scenes with the progress of the melody. In addition, he expressed the movie's contemporary and spatial background through music, and reinforced characterization by borrowing existing songs from the character's motif. By the afore-mentioned analysis, this study shows that the musical technique of Erich Wolfgang Korngold plays the different roles in the film: the function of symbolizing characters, expressing the motion and the state of the screen, using the diegetic music and the non-diegetic music, developing the story of the film, and reminding the scene in the film. As a result, this study derives that the music of Erich Wolfgang Korngold plays a key role in the film and establishes the function of film music today. In this regard, this study will contribute to the analysis of Hollywood early film music and the research on Korngold’s music and works including the music of the film ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’.
