Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience of art therapy in terms of assertiveness for a child who experienced his parents’ divorce and what the experience means to the child. The investigation was conducted using a qualitative case study method. The study participant was an eight-year-old boy who lives with his mother. In the study, the child participated in 15 50-minute weekly sessions between February 19 and June 4, 2015. The sessions were organized based on the objectives of art therapy for assertiveness for children with divorced parents—including enhancement of emotional stability, self-regulation, positive self-perception, and assertiveness. Collected data included tape recordings and verbatim transcripts of all art therapy sessions of the participant and counseling with his mother, and the observation log created by the researcher. Data was analyzed using the constant comparison method to explore the child’s experience of art therapy and the meaning of the experience for him. Specifically, the method involved a summary of significant verbal and art expressions from the participant based on multiple careful readings of the transcriptions, followed by open coding, categorization, and verification of categories. Based on the analysis, 5 broad subjects and 12 sub-topics were identified. The five topics of the art therapy experience were as follows: Hesitance due to a lack of confidence despite the desire to be with someone, being drawn into art activities that allow assertiveness, expressing and confronting suppressed negative emotions, feeling secure and warm about the time spent with the therapist, and the child feeling proud because he or she had figured out how to approach peers. Based on the results, the conclusions drawn about the experience of art therapy for assertiveness in a child of divorced parents are as follows: First, the study participant improved emotional stability and self-regulation by resolving negative emotions through art activities. Second, the study participant increased self-confidence by discovering his strengths and developing positive self-perception through art activities and creating art. Third, the study participant recognized the value of assertiveness and demonstrated greater assertiveness by experiencing deep empathy through art expressions. Fourth, the study participant restored his trust in others and experienced social support through interaction with his art therapist. In conclusion, the child of divorced parents was able to increase his adaptability into his changed life due to increased emotional stability and self-regulation through art therapy for assertiveness. This enabled him to perceive himself more positively, be more assertive, and develop positive interpersonal relationships.
