This study presents an elaborative look into the researcher’s self-composed dance work <Light ⦁ Heavy, and the In-betweens…> (중重⦁경輕, 그사이...). In particular, <Light ⦁ Heavy, and the In-betweens…> is created based on the researcher’s discovery of her soma, leading to her experience of healing past damages through the application of somatic learning. In the same manner, this dance work is choreographed and performed with an aim to demonstrate the researcher’s individual growth, which is made visible through her physical improvement. This study is conducted through a dual methodology of practice based research and literature review. Based on the theoretical works of Thomas Hanna, this paper elaborates on the definition and application of somatic learning, somatic consciousness, sensory-motor amnesia, proprioception, somatic arousal, as well as somatic experiencing techniques. Simultaneously, it also analyzes the dance work <Light ⦁ Heavy, and the In-betweens…> mainly through the means of practice based research, with primary source being experimental data, choreography notes, combined with video records of the composing, practicing, and performing process involved in the final product. With a focus on somatic learning, this research on <Light ⦁ Heavy, and the In-betweens…> has shed light on the following findings. Firstly, the author was able to treat her trauma gradually through the application of somatic learning in her daily practice. Furthermore, while working on her performance, the creator was able to heighten her senses and discover their heretofore ignored functions, all with the aid of somatic experience. Secondly, a profound understanding of somatic learning had enabled the author to utilize her originality. For instance, the author had learned to use left-right foot motions to complement each other, allowing her to master the fluidity of movements and to integrate more creativity. While unlearning the fixed definition and limits of movements, the author got to utilize her authenticity and explore new approaches, through which she invented her own unique moves and incorporated them into her dance performances. Thirdly, the researcher’s bodily functions had been improved significantly through somatic techniques. Specifically, a firsthand experience of proprioception had improved the author’s overall kinesthetic ability, enabling her to perform more diverse movements and enriching the emotional values of her dance. With these improvements, the process of practicing was no longer loaded with unnecessary tension, allowing the body and the mind to meet in relaxed, harmonious motions. Meanwhile, the dancer’s legs that were healed through somatic training could now perform substantial movements, thanks to which her whole body could move with great flexibility. Finally, as the dancer was enabled to fully integrate her senses into her physical performance, she also became increasingly sensitive to external impacts and her responses more impeccable. Through this extensive study, the researcher was able to deepen her understanding of bodily expression, taking off into a widened horizon in the art of dance. By turning the process of healing herself with somatic experience into a work of performance art, the dancer had not only explored her artistic potentials but also found anappropriate method to facilitate her professional development. Therefore, the author hopes that this paper would serve as a helpful reference for fellow dancers in their career as well. The writing of this paper has been a journey of healing the researcher’s physical and emotional wounds with arts asa remedy. Thus, the paper shall not be interpreted as an exclusively scientific study, but rather as the retelling of how the researcher had improvised herself through somatic learning. On that premise, the author expects that the findings of this research would be valuable to both dancers and non-dancers who suffer from trauma, as well as to choreographers who aspire to develop a new style of dance. Last but not least, the present paper aspires to exemplify that a profound facilitation of bodily healing, creativity, and function are totally achievable through somatic learning.-
