한국춤 연구의 영상인류학적 접근

Abstract

This study begins with a question of how to find a new direction in traditional Korean dance research. Visual anthropology and documentary production is an answer to this question as it effectively captures Korean dance and makes it possible to be analyzed properly. It is a great method in modern media era, simultaneously serving academic purpose as well. This paper is to examine the anthropological approach of traditional Korean dance research and apply it to the study of Mary Jo Freshley respectively. Visual anthropology is a field of study where finding the essence of human being is sought through ethnic cultural diversity research and its meaning. The process and results of this study is documented on ethnographic film or anthropological documentary. The methodology has been developed through both academic and cinematic fields so it is suitable for an academic approach in Korean dance study as it is highly adaptable to modern media era. Korean dance study has been building its academic identity by actively adapting to paradigm shift in contemporary arts and research. It aims to promote cultural and artistic superiority of Korean dance. The visual anthropological approach on Korean dance study follows the precedents of academic tendency and focusing on understanding the attributes of each study, therefore reaching interdisciplinary results that combine positive attributes of each line of study. The three focal points of visual anthropological take on Korean dance study were: The true nature of traditional dance reproduced by video media, the viewpoint on national culture, and the study focused on visuality. They enabled the discussion on what to newly pursue on interdisciplinary research and what to keep from the preexistent research tendencies. The components of documentary as a visual anthropological take on Korean dance study are: traditional culture, tradition successor, traditional dance, researcher, and visual language. Each component was used in research process in Hawaii and throughout the overall documentary production to record and analyze Korean dance. The documentary was produced with following process; Pre-production, production, post-production and release. The each process was devised to maximize the visual media use on Korean dance. The documentary 〈Korean dancer, Mary Jo Freshley〉 was produced as a visual anthropological take on Korean dance study. Mary Jo Freshley, whose life and work the documentary focuses on, runs dance institute in Hawaii. Her work has initiated discussion on finding a new direction in Korean dance study and attracted attention on how to support Korean dance researchers internationally. The researcher has worked closely on developing the material, production planning, research process in Hawaii and the release to validate the use of documentary production in Korean dance study. The documentary production on Korean dance as an academic approach on Korean dance that is avaliable for people is fruitful because it initiates a new direction in Korean dance study utilizing multi-media and interdisciplinary approach. The documentary production proposed in this study could be utilized on further studies as a way of finding new inspirations for Korean dance and successors. This study is meaningful as a basis work for such further research. ;본 논문은 한국춤 연구의 새로운 방향성에 대한 의문으로부터 출발하였다. 이것은 곧 한국춤을 효과적으로, 그리고 전문적으로 기록·분석할 수 있는 방법의 탐구로 연결되었으며, 현 시대 매체환경에 적응하면서도 본연의 학술적 기능을 잃지 않는 방식으로서 영상인류학 및 다큐멘터리 제작에 주목하였다. 이에 따라 본 논문은 한국춤 연구의 영상인류학적 접근 방안을 고찰하고 적용하기 위해 다큐멘터리 제작 방안을 고안하고 ‘메리 조 프레실리(Mary Jo Freshley)’에 대한 연구에 적용함으로써 그 활용 가능성을 논의하였다. 영상인류학은 ‘인간이란 무엇인가?’라는 인류학의 궁극적 질문을 배경으로 민족문화의 다양성과 의미를 연구하며 그 과정과 결과를 민족지영화 혹은 인류학 다큐멘터리로 구현하는 분야이다. 문화연구 관련 학술분야와 영화예술분야의 양측을 아우르며 방법론 및 결과물을 발전시켰으므로 현 시대 매체 환경에 적응할 수 있는 한국춤 연구의 학문적 접근법으로서 적합하다. 한편 한국춤 연구는 동시대 예술과 학문의 패러다임 변화에 능동적으로 대처하고 타학문의 접근법을 독자적으로 적용하는 방식을 통해 학문적 정체성을 형성해 왔으며, 한국춤의 문화적, 예술적 우수성을 확산시키는 데 목적을 둔다. 따라서 한국춤 연구의 영상인류학적 접근 역시 그간의 학문적 흐름을 존중하는 방향으로 나아가되 두 학문에 내재된 개별적 특성을 심층적으로 이해함으로써 일보 갱신된 융합의 결과를 도출하는 데 집중하였다. 연구 결과, 한국춤 연구의 영상인류학적 접근 쟁점은 ‘영상미디어가 재현하는 한국춤의 특성’, ‘민족문화에 대한 관점’, ‘시각성 중심의 연구’로 설정하였으며 이들 쟁점은 두 학문분야의 융합이 새롭게 추구해야 할 점 및 기존의 연구 흐름을 고수해야 할 점에 대한 논의를 가능케 했다. 한국춤 연구의 영상인류학적 접근 방안으로서 다큐멘터리의 구성요소는 ‘전승문화, 전승자, 한국춤, 연구자, 영상언어’로 설정하였으며 각 요소는 한국춤을 연구하기 위한 현지조사 및 영상 제작 전반에서 한국춤의 기록과 분석의 기준으로 활용될 수 있었다. 다큐멘터리의 제작 단계는 ‘사전 제작 - 제작 - 후반 제작 - 발표’로 이루어지며 각 단계별 내용은 한국춤과 영상미디어의 특성을 융합하고 적용함으로써 구성되었다. 끝으로 한국춤 연구의 영상인류학적 접근 방안 적용은 다큐멘터리 〈한국무용가, 메리 조 프레실리〉의 제작을 통해 이루어졌다. 다큐멘터리의 주인공인 메리 조 프레실리는 하와이에서 한라함 무용연구소를 운영하며 배구자와 배한라의 춤 전승에 매진해온 인물로 그에 대한 연구는 한국 근대춤 연구의 새로운 방향성 및 국제사회 내 한국춤 확산에 기여하는 인물에 대한 관심과 지원에 관한 논의를 촉발시켰다. 연구자는 소재의 탐색과 설정, 제작 기획, 현지에서의 참여·관찰, 촬영과 편집, 발표에 이르는 전체 제작 과정을 충실히 이행하고 체계적으로 묘사함으로써 앞서 제시한 다큐멘터리 제작 방안의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다. 이로써 한국춤을 학술적으로 다루면서도 대중에 확산될 수 있는 방법에 대한 고민은 한국춤을 전문적으로 다루는 다큐멘터리 제작으로 결실 맺을 수 있었으며, 이러한 시도는 한국춤 연구의 새로운 방향을 제시하기 위한 학제 간, 매체 간의 다차원적 융합이었음에 의의가 있다. 본 논문에서 제시한 다큐멘터리의 제작 방안이 향후 한국춤의 다채로운 소재를 탐색하고 저변의 전승자를 부상시키는 데 활용되기 위해서는 보다 다양한 경로의 접근 및 시도가 지속되어야 할 것이며 본 연구는 그러한 시도와 연구의 기초 작업으로서 의미를 갖는다.
