영화 <사랑에 대한 모든 것(The Theory of Everything)>의 음악 분석을 통한 요한 요한슨(Johann Johannsson)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영화 〈사랑에 대한 모든 것(The Theory of Everything, 2014)〉의 음악 분석을 통한 요한 요한슨(Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson, 1969~2018)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 아이슬란드 영화 음악 작곡가 요한 요한슨(이후 요한슨)은 할리우드에 입성하여 이름을 알렸지만 4~5년이라는 짧은 활동 후 갑작스럽게 사망하여 국내에는 많이 알려지지 않았다. 본 논문에서는 전자 음악 작곡가로 잘 알려진 요한슨이 이례적으로 어쿠스틱 악기만을 대부분 사용하였고 어떠한 음악적인 요소로 표현했는지 연구하려고 한다. 영화 〈사랑에 대한 모든 것〉은 물리학에 큰 업적을 남긴 스티븐 호킹(Stephen William Hawking, 1942~2018)의 전 부인이자 작가인 제인 호킹(Jane Beryl Wilde Hawking Jones, 1944~)이 쓴 회상록을 원작으로, 루게릭병을 앓고 있는 물리학자 스티븐 호킹이 아내의 헌신적인 도움을 받으며 세계적인 명사가 되어가는 과정을 보여주는 영화이다. 연구의 첫 단계로 요한슨이 태어나고 성장한 나라의 영화 음악 작곡가의 동향, 요한슨의 생애와 작품 세계, 영화의 제작 배경을 살펴보았다. 작은 인구수의 아이슬란드는 작은 영화 제작 수만큼 영화 음악 작곡가 또한 많지 않았다. 요한슨은 대학에서 언어와 문학을 전공했지만 혼자 음악 공부를 하면서 여러 분야의 사람들과 다양한 협업을 토대로 할리우드에 진출하게 된다. 할리우드 진출 1년 후 〈사랑에 대한 모든 것〉의 음악을 맡으며 제72회 골든 글로브 상(Golden Globe Awards)에서 음악상을 수상하였고, 제87회 아카데미상(Academy Awards)에서 후보로 지명되었다. 연구의 방법으로는 영화의 줄거리를 파악하고 음악을 분석하여 음악적 특징을 규명하였다. 작품 줄거리의 흐름에 따라 발단, 전개, 절정 결말 네 부분으로 나누어 각 장면에 따른 음악의 구성을 분석하였다. 분석의 결과, 음악적 특징은 하나의 모티프를 다양하게 변형한 형태로 여러 장면에 사용하여 영화의 구조에 중요한 음악적 장치로 사용하였고, 같은 테마의 곡을 반대되는 상황에도 사용하여 감정을 극대화 시켰으며, 어쿠스틱 악기를 사용하여 특수 기법을 결합하거나 음향효과를 더해 우주적인 분위기를 묘사하였고, 몇 개의 화음으로 이루어진 현악 소리의 질감을 반복 사용하여 인물 내면의 심리를 단순하게 전달하였으며, 영화의 흐름상 시간을 생략하여 축약된 장면들을 이어주는 역할을 하였다. 이러한 고찰을 통한 결과로 요한슨은 영화의 정서적인 내용에 초점을 맞추며 섬세하게 작업을 하였고, 짧은 길이의 곡들이지만 간단하게 심리를 전달할 뿐 아니라 요한슨만의 스타일로써 미니멀적인 요소 안에 서정성을 담아 감정을 표현하였다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문의 연구를 통하여 요한슨만의 음악적 특징과 유작이 된 그의 작품 세계가 널리 알려져 하나의 장르에만 정착하지 않고 새로운 것을 도전하던 작곡가 요한슨의 연구가 지속되길 바란다.;This paper is a study on the musical characteristics of Johann Johannsson(Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson, 1969~2018) through the music analysis of the film “The Theory of Everything (2014).” Icelandic film music composer Johann Johannsson entered Hollywood and made himself well-known, but he suddenly died after a short musical career of four or five years, unfortunately, he is not known much in Korea. In this paper, why Johann Johannsson, who is well known as an electronic music composer, and mostly use only acoustic instruments, which is extraordinary, and with what musical elements he articulated are to be investigated. “The Theory of Everything” as the film is based on the memoir of Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen (2007) written by Jane Hawking(Jane Beryl Wilde Hawking Jones, 1944~), a writer and the ex-wife of Stephen Hawking(Stephen William Hawking, 1942~2018), who has accomplished great achievements in physics, depicts Stephen Hawking, a physicist with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) and the process of becoming a global celebrity with the help of his wife. As the first step of the study, the trends of the film music composers in the country where Johann Johannsson was born and had grown, his life and the world of his artworks, as well as the background of filmmaking were looked at. Iceland with its small population did not have as many film music composers as the small number of film productions. Johann Johannsson majored in languages and literature at the university, but as he studied music alone, he entered Hollywood based on various collaborations with people from different fields. A year after entering Hollywood, as he took charge of composing “The Theory of Everything” soundtrack, he won Best Original Score at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards and was nominated for Best Original Score at the 87th Academy Awards. As a method of study, the musical characteristics has been established by getting a grasp of the film plot and analyzing the music. The composition of the music has been analyzed to each scene by dividing it into four parts-beginning, development, climax and ending-according to the flow of the plot. The results of the analysis showed that regarding the musical characteristics, a single motif was used as an important musical device in the structure of the film in various scenes in a variety of modified forms, and emotions were maximized by the use of the same theme scores even in the opposite situation, the mood as if in a state of spacey feeling was created by adding sound effects or combining special techniques using acoustic instruments, the mentality of the character was conveyed plainly by repeatedly using the texture of the string sound composed of several chords, and a role of connecting cutbacks was played by omitting the time in the flow of the film. As a result of these considerations, there are two facts that have been appreciated such as Johann Johannsson worked delicately with a focus on the emotional details of the film, and although they are short pieces of music, they not only conveyed sentiments easily but also depicted emotions with lyricism in the minimal elements as Johann Johannsson’s unique style. I hope that the study of Johann Johannsson, the composer who challenged new things continues not settling for just a single genre through the spread of Johann Johannsson’s unique musical characteristics and his world of the oeuvre, the posthumous works.
