랄로 쉬프린(Lalo Schifrin)의 영화 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

무성영화에서 발성영화로 이어지는 과정 속에서, 영화음악은 시대적 배경을 따라 유행하는 음악에 맞추어 변화하였다. 영화에서 음악의 사용은 음악과 시나리오의 결합에 따라 영상의 분위기를 효과적으로 서술했으며, 영화의 주된 스토리를 서술하듯이 영상을 묘사하는데 주로 사용되었다. 시대별 음악의 스타일 변화 속에서, 본 논문은 영화의 분위기를 효과적으로 서술해 내는 빅밴드 스윙 재즈 장르와 영상의 불안감을 표현하거나 긴장감을 효율적으로 조절하는 현대음악 장르를 접목해 영화음악의 새로운 스타일을 창조한 랄로 쉬프린(Lalo Schifrin, 1932~)의 영화음악에 대한 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 방법으로는 첫 번째로 할리우드 영화음악사에서 재즈 스타일의 흐름과, 영화에서의 재즈음악 사용 변천사를 살펴보았다. 이후로는 재즈 연주자이자 현대음악 작곡가로써 활동한 랄로 쉬프린의 생애와 작품세계를 살펴보았다. 랄로 쉬프린의 작품들 중 가장 높은 비율을 차지하는 액션 스릴러 장르의 음악적 특징에 대하여 연구하였으며, 그의 음악 중 가장 유명한 테마인 “Mission Impossible” 테마를 선정하였고, 영화 〈블리트(Bullitt), 1968〉, 〈더티 해리(Dirty Harry)〉 시리즈, 〈러시 아워(Rush Hour)〉 시리즈를 선정하여 그의 음악 특징에 대해 알아보았다. 연구 결과, 랄로 쉬프린은 1960년대부터 2000년대 초반까지 활발하게 활동하였으며, 특히 많은 수의 액션 스릴러 장르 영화음악을 작업하였는데, 쉬프린 음악의 특징은 재즈의 즉흥성을 기본으로 하여 지속적인 리듬 사용(오스티나토 베이스)과 음색의 다양성을 추구하는 것이며, 주인공과 범인에게 특징적인 악기군과 음색을 부여해 라이트모티브를 지정하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 특히 현대음악 특수주법을 타악기의 리듬과 함께 사용하여 추격전과 격투신에서의 효과적인 긴장감 조절을 묘사하며, 관악기와 현악기 음색의 변화를 통해 액션 스릴러 장르에서 요구하는 영상의 긴장감과 불안감을 효과적으로 서술해 낸다. 랄로 쉬프린은 재즈와 20세기 현대음악 기법의 혼합을 이루어 그만의 독특한 영화음악 스타일을 만들어 낸 작곡가이다. 그는 다양한 음악적 시도와 현대음악 효과의 사용을 통해 많은 영화 음악인들에게 새로운 음악 장르에 대한 도전의식을 불러일으켰다. 할리우드 명예의 전당에 헌정되었으며 명예 오스카 상을 수상한 랄로 쉬프린에 대한 지속적이고 체계적인 연구가 이루어지길 기대하며 본 논문이 랄로 쉬프린의 다른 작품들을 연구하는 이들에게 유익한 선행 연구 자료로 활용되기 바란다.;In the process of leading from silent to vocal films, film music has changed into background music that is popular according to its times. The use of music in movies effectively describes the atmosphere of images according to the combination of music and scenarios that was mainly used to describe images as they were. In this change in style of film music by age, this paper has conducted a study of film music by Lalo Schifrin (Lalo Schifrin, 1932~), which created a new style of film music by combining the big band swing jazz genre that effectively describes the mood of the movie with the contemporary music genre that expresses or effectively controls the tension and anxiety of the image. The first way to study it was to look at the jazz style trend in Hollywood film music history and the history of changing the use of jazz music in movies. Since then, he has looked at the life and work world of Lalo Schifrin, a jazz player and contemporary music composer. I studied the musical characteristics of the action thriller genre, which is the highest proportion of the works of Lalo Schifrin, selected the most famous theme of his music “Mission Impossible” main theme, and selected the films 〈Bullitt, 1968〉, 〈Dirty Harry〉 series, and 〈Rush Hour〉 series. According to the study, Lalo Schifrin worked actively from the 1960s to the early 2000s, and especially worked on a number of action-thriller genre movies. The characteristics of Schfrin music are the pursuit of constant rhythm (Ostinato base) and tone diversity based on the spontaneity of jazz, and the designation of Leitmotiv by giving the main character and the criminal a distinctive range of instruments and sounds. It effectively describes the tension and anxiety of the image through the use of percussion rhythm and the change of Aerophone and string tone. Lalo Schifrin is a composer who created his own unique style of film music by mixing jazz and 20th century contemporary music techniques. He has challenged many movie musicians with a new musical genre through various musical attempts and the use of modern music effects. Hopefully, a persistent and systematic study of the honorary Oscar-winning Lalo Schifrin will be conducted, and this paper will be used as a good prior study for those who study the other works of Lalo Schifrin.
