뮤지컬 〈타이타닉〉의 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

뮤지컬〈타이타닉〉은 타이타닉 호의 선체가 발견되었다는 기사를 보고 영감을 받은 작곡가 모리 예스톤(Maury Yeston, 1945-)과 극작가 피터 스톤(Peter Stone, 1930-2003)이 협업하여 최초로 뮤지컬로 제작된 작품이다. 이 작품은 무겁고 어두운 스토리로 인해 흥행에 실패할 것이라는 부정적인 견해가 지배적이었다. 예스톤은 이러한 우려에도 불구하고 뮤지컬 화하는데 성공하면서 뮤지컬계의 아카데미상이라 불리는 토니상 5개 부문과 드라마 데스크상 1개 부문에서 수상하였으며, 그래미상에도 후보에 오르는 성과를 거두었다. 이에 뮤지컬〈타이타닉〉을 연구 대상으로 하여 예스톤이 비극적인 스토리를 뮤지컬을 통해서 어떻게 풀어가고 있는지, 극의 주제를 어떻게 설정했는지, 각 장면에서 사용된 음악적 요소와 그 역할은 무엇인지 등을 음악 분석을 통하여 연구하였다. 연구 절차는 타이타닉을 소재로 한 다양한 장르의 작품들을 시대 순으로 정리해보았고, 예스톤의 생애와 작품세계를 그리고 작품에 나타나는 그의 세계관을 살펴보았다. 또한 뮤지컬〈타이타닉〉의 극의 흐름과 주제를 파악하기 위해 줄거리를 1막과 2막으로 나누어 작품 전체의 각 부분에 사용된 뮤지컬 넘버를 중심으로 음악을 분석하였다. 본 논문은 국내에 초연(2017년 1월)된 뮤지컬〈타이타닉〉에서 삽입된 음악 전체를 분석한 첫 연구라는 점에서 의의를 들 수 있다. 연구 결과 예스톤의 뮤지컬〈타이타닉〉의 음악적 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 세 가지 모티브가 반복 사용되었다. 비극적인 결말이지만 희망을 노래하고자 하는 작곡가의 의도에 따라서 타이타닉 호를 타고 꿈을 꾸거나 빙산과 충돌하는 절망적인 상황에서 희망 모티브가 반복되었고, 첫 출항을 축하할 때 팡파르 리듬을, 그리고 빙산 출현을 암시하거나 빙산과 충돌한 후 구조 요청을 할 때 모스 부호 리듬을 반복 사용하였다. 둘째, 바다를 배경으로 하는 극의 분위기를 표현하기 위해 아르페지오, 트릴, 2도와 3도의 화성 진행을 반복하여 파도의 모습을 묘사하였고, 풍성한 음색의 관악기와 온음표의 긴 리듬 그리고 도약 진행으로 타이타닉 호의 거대함을 묘사하였다. 셋째, 비극과 희망이 교차되는 극의 상황을 묘사하기 위해 수직적으로 장조와 단조가 혼용된 형태로 진행되거나, 곡의 처음에 으뜸음의 근음이 오지 않고, 3음이 베이스에 위치한 전위된 형태로 모호하게 시작하였다. 넷째, 리듬의 중요성을 밝힌 그의 음악적 견해를 반영하듯, 작품 전체의 선율은 대부분 레치타티보 기법이 사용되었다. 반주 또한 화성적인 진행보다는 리듬적으로 진행되었고, 때로는 뮤지컬 리듬을 계층적으로 반복 사용하기도 하였다. 다섯 째, 주인공의 인물 모티브나 주요 인물들의 아리아 위주의 진행이 아닌, 극의 분위기 묘사와 등장인물들의 심리 표현에 비중을 두면서 작품 전체에 걸쳐서 20세기 음악기법인 비조성적 진행, 복화음, 첨가화음, 병행 기법, 확장된 3화음, 연속적 2도 화음, 헤미올라, 불협화 코드의 불완전종지, 불협화 코드의 반복 등이 사용되었다. 이처럼 뮤지컬 음악이 성장하는데 기여한 예스톤의 〈타이타닉〉에 대한 분석을 계기로 비극적 소재도 다양한 음악적 기법으로 희망의 메지시가 전달되는 극적 구성의 뮤지컬로 승화될 수 있음을 예스톤이 실현했다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 뮤지컬 제작 시 무엇보다 음악적 기법과 요소 또한 매우 중요함을 예스톤이 제시했다고 여겨진다. 이에 그의 작품들이 지속적으로 연구되고 잘 알려지기를 바란다. ;The musical Titanic is the first musical to be produced by collaborating with inspired composer Maury Yeston(1945-) and playwright Peter Stone (1930-2003) in response to an article about the discovery of the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 1985. Although this work was dominated by a negative view that the heavy, dark storyline would fail to hit the box, unlike the usual musical material that deals with light contents or love stories, but despite its fears, he succeeded in making musicals, won five Tony Awards and one drama award, and also proved the value of his works. The purpose of this study is to know how the musical "Titanic" is being produced, how the story of the tragic past is being solved through the musical, how the theme of the play is set, and the element of the music used in the scene and its role. More specifically I do a chronological review of artwork on the Titanic across different genres, and also focus on the life and work of Yeston and his views of the world. In addition I analyze each of the musical numbers in the first and second act of the musical in order to parse out the flow and theme of the musical. My contribution to the literature is that this paper is the first one to analyze the entire numbers sung and played in the musical Titanic As I wrote above, in a bid to understand the flow and theme of the musical "Titanic," the plot was divided into two parts, the first part and the second part. The music was analyzed based on the musical number used in each part of the work. As a result of the study, I fugured out some musical characteristics of the musical〈Titanic〉. With a special emphasis on the overall mood and context of the play, it depicted the rippling of the waves as arpeggios, trills, two and three degrees Mars progression to describe the ocean as the background of the musical. The enormous and powerful appearance of the Titanic was expressed using wind instruments in rich tones, long rhythms of full marks, and leaping progress. He also portrayed the dreams of the passengers divided by the class of boarding, and depicted the psychology of the characters who changed before and after departure and after the accident with various musical techniques. In particular, 20th-century music techniques were often used to suggest tragic endings or to express dramatic situations. Thus, this musical has a tragic ending, but in contrast to the disaster, the message in the play to find hope and to sing is represented through a contrastive musical progression. In addition, he emphasized rhythm and showed musical progress different from other musicals based on Mars. Thus, through this work, Yeston proved that musicals can be expressed excellently even in dark and heavy materials rather than general musical materials-such as love and light stories. In addition, Yeston expressed the protagonists' state of mind in a sophisticated manner using the tools of the 20th century music, unlike easy-to-listen numbers found in other musicals. My hope is that this study can increase interests in Yeston's other works, which have contributed to the growth of musical by extending the themes on which musicals have traditionally been written.
