Abstract
;The purpose of this study is to investigate prospective music teachers’ understanding levels and perceptions of convergence and integrated education, and to seek an alternative curriculum plan for the lessons they have at Teachers Training Courses. With the samples consisting of 95 prospective music teachers, the research tried to grasp their understanding levels and perceptions of convergence and integrated education in music subject, along with their understanding of the Teachers Training Courses’ curriculum regarding such education. For the research, I conducted a survey questionnaire and statically analyzed the collected data by the means of the descriptive analysis, cross-sectional analysis and independent samples t-test. According to the analysis of the research findings, this study’s summary and proposition are like the following. Firstly, in order to see the teachers’ understanding levels depending on whether one has any relevant experience in convergence and integrated education or not, the data of their understanding levels were compared and analyzed based on subcategories, and the result showed that relevant experiences have no significant influence on the level of understanding. On the other hand, according to the analysis of the result of their responses to the specific questionnaire, the prospective music teachers with experiences in convergence and integrated education displayed a higher level of understanding than the ones without relevant experiences did, which showed a statistically significant result or difference. Likewise, the experienced had a higher average survey response rate in understanding levels than the inexperienced did, which also showed a statistically significant difference. On the whole, however, there wasn’t a noticeable difference depending on having the relevant experience, and I believe it is because Teachers’ Training Courses does not cover any theoretical knowledge of convergence and integrated education in depth. Secondly, according to the result of the survey questionnaire on the prospective teachers’ perceptions of convergence and integrated education in music subject, the level of interest in and the necessity of the education were perceived positively by most of the teachers. However, depending on one’s having an experience in convergence and integrated education, a teacher’s motivation for interest differed moderately. In the survey response to what motivated them to get interested in convergence and integrated education, experienced prospective teachers had the highest response rate in “classes at the Teachers Training Courses” and the inexperienced in “materials such as theses or journals”. The result shows that an experience in convergence and integrated education at Teachers Training Courses affects the level of interest. In the analysis of the prospective music teachers’ capabilities depending on their experiences in convergence and integrated education, the response rates in one’s capability of content knowledge, curriculum and evaluation were higher in the experienced than in the inexperienced, which shows a significant difference. Therefore an education for prospective teachers’ capabilities pertaining to convergence and integrated education at Teachers Training Courses should be essential. Thirdly, in the result from the analysis of the prospective music teachers’ general perceptions of Teachers Training Courses’ curriculum with regards to convergence and integrated education, most teachers had a positive view on its opening courses. And, regardless of one’s experience, they said they want to take a course of “teaching guidance methods to convergence and integrated education” the most. The result shows that even prospective music teachers with relevant experiences feel the lack of applicable courses in the educational field. The findings of the result show that having a relevant experience in convergence and integrated education affects one’s level of understanding and perception. On the basis of the result, I look forward that more training institutions open courses on convergence and integrated education, and give prospective teachers an opportunity to have various and thorough teaching experience in convergence and integrated education, and therefore more of them come to be equipped with theoretical understanding and essential capability of convergence and integrated education.
