Abstract
Introduction to Computer, which is one of the specialized courses provided by Commercial Information High schools, enables students to acquire skills required in information-oriented society, apply basic knowledge of computer, and learn appropriate computer usage. Basic mathematical abilities are required in this course. However, the mathematics curriculum and content in the schools are identical to those in general high schools without considering integration into Introduction to Computer. Therefore, this study intends to present a direction for effective teaching in Introduction to Computer. A total of 107 schools were randomly selected from 180 commercial information high schools in Korea. Textbooks of Mathematics and Introduction to Computer are compared regarding contents, learning period, and teaching methods. Moreover, questionnaires are conducted to ask students whether the courses are well-linked in terms of learning period and contents. Therefore, the following research questions are set to accomplish the objective. 1. Analysis of textbooks of Mathematics in terms of learning period and contents related to Introduction to Computer 2. Analysis of the students’perception of the connection between Mathematics and Introduction to Computer In order to solve the research problem 1, four textbooks for Introduction to Computer are selected among textbooks under 2009 revision curriculum to identify which particular contents and lessons are related to Mathematics. In addition, the learning period of Introduction to Computer is compared with that of Mathematics. According to the analysis, Commercial information high school students take Introduction to Computer and Mathematics Ⅰ in the first grade and Mathematics Ⅱ in the second grade. Some schools additionally provide courses for Probability & Statistics and Calculus I. Introduction to Computer textbooks contain mathematical content from elementary school, middle school, and Commercial Information High School, and content beyond the secondary education curriculum as well. First, mathematical concepts from the elementary school and the middle school appeared on the Introduction to Computer as: line graphs, bar graphs, ratio graphs, tables from the elementary school and Numbers& Calculation (integers, absolute values, maximum common divisors, mixed calculations, and small and large relationships), Probability & Statistics (mean and histograms), Letters& Expressions (variables), and Geometry (area of a circle) from the middle school curriculum. Second, contents of Mathematics I, Mathematics II, and Probability & Statistics are discovered in Commercial Information High School textbooks. Polynomials and concepts of descending and ascending orders are utilized related to MathematicsⅠ. Mathematics Ⅱ is the most connected course, from which the concepts of set, sequence, and exponent are related. The mathematical content related to Probability & Statistics is a Combination. Activities in Introduction to Computer require students to apply the concept of combination to classify a computer network. Third, contents beyond Commercial Information High School but from other high school curriculum are found such as Calculus Ⅱ, Geometry & Vector. Related to Calculus II, a Trigonometric function is employed to interpret graphs. Coordinates from Geometry & Vector are utilized to explain how computers store image. Fourth, mathematical contents beyond the Korean secondary education curriculum include Euclidean law(a method to find the greatest common divisor), algorithm, flowchart, 'mod,' (one of the symbols of arithmetic operators), cryptogram, number system, antilogarithm. and truth table. To sum up, a number of mathematical concepts are linked. Commercial Information highschool students could learn related mathematics after learning Introduction to Computer. They could also learn mathematical contents beyond the secondary education curriculum from this computer course. In order to solve the research problem 2, questionnaire surveys were conducted on the first-grade students from 16 Commercial Information high schools in 2017. The students in the survey considered employment (62.5%) and college entrance (37.5%) as a future path after graduation. In order to examine the students' thoughts about the mathematical content integrated with Introduction to Computer courses and effective teaching methods, we conducted the following questionnaire. Four problems in Introduction to Computer textbooks were excerpted related to the Mathematics Ⅱ (Progression and Exponent), CalculusⅡ(Trigonometric function), and contents beyond the curriculum. The students’learning results on these problems were analyzed. Moreover, the questionnaire investigated the actual situation of Commercial Information highschool, student’s perception of the connection between the two courses, effective Mathematics learning methods, and administration system of Commercial Information Highschool. As a survey result, 62.5% of students agreed that the two courses are related. When integrated mathematical content appeared on the Introduction to Computer course, 50% responded they “half understood” whereas 25% responded they “hardly understood.” Concerning reasons for the difficulty, S1 responded, “I don’t know how to apply Mathematics to study Introduction to Computer. There are also many things I didn’t learn yet.” As such, students who perceive the two courses are related still fall short in applying the mathematical concepts within computer courses. When the survey was conducted, students had learned the concepts of Progression and Exponent, but they hadn’t learned a Trigonometric function from Calculus II. According to the problem-solving questionnaire, a majority of students thought that problems were difficult because the lesson lacked enough explanation on Mathematics. According to Question 〈1-4〉 and Question 〈4-4〉, they could understand more easily when they were given computer problems after learning Progression and Exponent in class. From the study above, it was found out that Introduction to Computer course is highly related to Mathematics courses. However, it also contained mathematical concepts of a more advanced level such as radix transformation, truth table tabulation, and cryptography. Furthermore, the questionnaire result shows that students can understand mathematics more effectively when they first learn Mathematics and then apply the knowledge in Introduction to Computer problems. Accordingly, learning periods of the two courses and the integration of the two courses should be considered.
