Trafficking in persons is a prominent global issue affecting tens of millions of people around the world, in which females are the most disadvantaged. Vietnam is seen as an origin country with a yearly average of one thousand victims, who are mostly female, for the purposes of prostitution and forced marriage. Despite significant efforts to stop trafficking, the situation of trafficking in persons is on the rise, negatively affecting national socio-economic development. One of the government priorities for prevention of trafficking is to raise people’s awareness of trafficking prevention. To contribute to achieving this national goal of reducing and stopping trafficking in the future, I conducted this study to identify which factors may contribute to people’s awareness of trafficking issues, by exploring the relationship between demographic characteristics and the level of awareness of trafficking, as well as the ability to access sources of information on trafficking prevention. A survey of 100 respondents, including both men and women, was implemented in three rural, mountainous and urban provinces, with participants of different age, job, and educational levels. My research results show a significant lack of awareness about human trafficking, especially the perception of what trafficking is, what are the tricks used by traffickers, the consequences of trafficking and legal understanding. Various elements, namely education, living areas, age and sex, were identified as the underlying determinants of the level of understanding, as well as ability to access the source of information on trafficking prevention. Based on the findings, several recommendations at policy and practical level have been made, with the aim of contributing to develop a more gender-sensitive policy in human trafficking prevention as well as promoting people’s access to education, information and rural development. Communication of community awareness raising on prevention of human trafficking is also proposed to specific target groups.
