Why are Sino-Thais not able to speak Chinese, but Thai-Muslims speak Yawi? This thesis examines factors contributing towards the success as well as the limitations of the Thai state’s assimilationist policies towards Chinese diasporas, their descendants and ethnic Malay Muslims in southern border provinces of Thailand. Due to diverse national interests driven by external influences, Siamese governments started to take various actions towards each group through national education and regulations during different periods. Together with characteristics of open and closed ethnic communities and cultural differences, this has caused a variety of policy outcomes. As a result, assimilationist policies were successful in assimilating the Chinese, yet failed to assimilate Malay Muslims into mainstream Thai society and culture.;어째서 중국계 태국인은 중국어를 할 수 없는 반면 무슬림계 태국인은 빠따니말레이어를 할 수 있을까?
