School is an important environment to nurture children’s food habit. The school food environment, however, often provides food that is not desirable for children’s health. Most of elementary school children in Indonesia have access to street foods sold in their school vicinity during break time. The street foods have been reported to cause health problems due to its safety issues. Although related stakeholders have created guidelines for the children and parents to discriminate safe and hazardous food, the guidelines have not protected the children from serious health issues following the consumption of street foods. This study aims to examine parents’ perception of the risk and benefit of current school food environment and their avoidance to school food environment by considering their food risk knowledge and trust to food seller as the antecedents to risk and benefit perception. The measurement items were developed from literature review and categorized into ‘food risk knowledge’, ‘trust to food seller’, ‘perceived risk’, ‘perceived benefit’, and ‘avoidance to school food environment’. ‘Food risk knowledge’ was measured using 9 ‘true’ or ‘false’ questions where the subjects’ total score were categorized into three categories. ‘Trust to food seller’, ‘perceived risk’, ‘perceived benefit’, ‘avoidance to school food environment’ was measured using 5-point Likert scale in 33 items. Data were collected at September 2018 using online questionnaire with the total of subjects used for the study are 355 Public School subjects and 219 Private School subjects. Exploratory factor analysis was done to examine the factors of perceived risk and benefit. The final measurement scale consisted of 7 items in ‘trust to food seller’; 9 items in ‘perceived risk’; 4 items in ‘perceived nutritional benefit’; 3 items in ‘perceived accessibility benefit’; and 2 items in ‘avoidance to school food environment’ was validated by confirmatory factor analysis. The differences of parents’ perceptions were analyzed using independent samples T-test analysis. There are no significant differences on how Public School parents and Private School parents perceive risk and benefit, except that Public School parents perceived the current school food environment nutritional benefit significantly higher than the Private School parents. Hypotheses were analyzed using a structural equation model. The parents’ food risk knowledge positively influenced the perception of risk significantly in Public School but not in Private School parents. Trust to food seller influenced the perception of risk negatively but influenced the perception of nutritional benefit positively in both group of parents. Additionally, trust to food seller also influenced the perception of accessibility benefit negatively in Public School parents. Both Public and Private School parents’ avoidance to school food environment were positively influenced by the perception of risk but negatively influenced by the perception of nutritional benefit. Overall, both group of parents showed encouragement and acceptance to the proposed risk management plan, showing that the parents support any action to create better school food environment for the children. Results from this study presented that parents showed avoidance to the current school food environment and there should be a new risk management plan created by related stakeholders to the school food environment. For the intervention to get support from the parents is by putting stress on how it will create the environment for the children to get food with low risk and high nutritional benefit. This study proved that the concept of risk and benefit perception could also be adapted into an existing hazard. It also provides insights on how Indonesian parents perceived the street foods sold in the school and how stakeholders and food sellers could use the perceptions to get the parents’ support.;학교는 아이들의 식습관을 길러주는 중요한 환경이다.
