Abstract
;Students who get to learn Trigonometric Function for the first time in high school have trouble in understanding the idea of "period". Thus, this work aims to introduce the concept of trigonometric function using the real-life materials and engineering tools which are emphasized in curriculum of mathematics department in order to help students understand it. The aim of the study is to look into what are the cognitive characteristics and the affective characteristics of learning sine function using the real-life materials, the ebb and flow of the tide that changes periodically, in accordance with mathematical modeling process. This paper will argue that: (1) What are the cognitive characteristics of learning sine function when mathematical modeling process is introduced into sine function? (2) What are the affective characteristics of learning sine function when mathematical modeling process is introduced into sine function? The subjects of this study were three first-year male students of three different high schools in Gwangju. Their grades were in the upper ranks of their classes and they had never attended math classes using computer or other engineering tools at all. I gave classes in a small-scale lecture room where a camera and a recorder were installed with personal computers in order to keep a close watch the course. There were three classes in accordance with mathematical modeling process and research materials such as pre and post examination, the Geogabra questionnaire, and the examination of attitude were collected for the study. The grades of the post test were compared with ones of the prior test according to the scoring standards of Table 9. And the contents of conversation in classes were coded and analyzed in two aspects, cognitive domains and affective domains, according to Table 6 and Table 7 for each class. The analysis results of the work are as follows. In the aspect of the cognitive characteristics, it was easier for students to approach the mathematical theory and their abilities to solve real-life problem had been improved after the experiment because they learned sine function through mathematical modeling process. Also it was helpful for them to understand the principles of drawing sine function as they came across the trace graph of it dynamically through Geogebra. Moreover, it gave them opportunity to draw the graph and experience it themselves. So, it was possible to have extended thoughts from the idea of trigonometric ratio to the concept of trigonometric function. In the aspect of the affective characteristics, students could see the necessity of mathematics and concentrate in class with interest and curiosity because the class dealt with the real-life materials to teach the concept of sine function. At first, three students who were involved in the experiment felt anxiety about using the engineering tools because it was the first time for them to handle Geogebra. However, as the classes were progressed, they could focus on their classes since it was convenient to draw the graph using Geogebra and they were interested in watching the dynamical change directly. Thus, even though students felt anxiety about this class using mathematical modeling in general, there were positive effects in that they got to have interest, curiosity, confidence, value perception, and learning motivation in the process of solving the problem. In this study, it comes to the conclusion that : Firstly, it allowed students to develop self-directed thinking as it was the real-life subject matter and they had to solve the problems by themselves in the classes. Secondly, it helped students to understand the concept of sine function because they had the opportunity to observe dynamic variation of function by drawing the trace graph of sine function using Geogebra. It was possible to perceive two notions, the sine of Specific angle which was learned when they studied trigonometric ratio and sine function, as one concept connected each other, not two different concepts. Thirdly, it made them recognize the necessity of mathematics naturally by adopting the real-life subject matter and inspired them with interest, curiosity, perception to value of mathematics and motivation of learning in affective domains.
