;This study examines the everyday home-making practices and the meaning of home contested and reproduced through everyday life based on the experience of young adults living alone in Seoul. In order to do it, it is based on the premise that young adults are active actors who are not anchored in an unstable settlement but who make their homesthrough alternative practices and their home is a relational place with various meanings rather than a problematic place. The purposes of this study are as follows: First, it explores the meaning of home imagined by young adults living alone by tracking the process of their migration experience. Through the conflicts and negotiations with the various actors involved in a series of migrations process, it also examine both reality and desire for home. Second, it examine everyday practices of young adults living alone and how these practices produce a home through relationships with various materials and places. The subjects of this study is young adults aged 19-34 living along in Seoul. A total of 23 research participants recruited through snowball sampling and the research is conducted with in-depth interviews. Such research methodologies enables this study to discover various meanings of migration experiences and home-making practices that are not standardized and unrevealed in the relationships between various actors. As a theoretical background of research, conceptions of ‘relational place’, ‘assemblage thinking’, and ‘mobility’ were used. Applying these concepts, non-human actors usually overlooked could be exposed and it enabled to understand the complexities involved in creating a home. The results of this study are as follows. First, young adults exit from parents’ home still depend on their parents economicallybecause welfare systems such as financial support and social housing for young adults are limited. It leads them to shared accommodation as a result of the negotiation with their parents or their strategic choice. However, this kind of housing type is considered as transitional and cannot provide privacy. Eventually, young people are transferred to a 'studio(원룸)' after a series of migration process for fulfilling their needs. In their home, they sometimes feel a sense of belonging and intimacy through social-network, accumulation of things but sometimes feel a sense of alienation and hopelessness because of the lack of relationships. The home is not a physical place that is confined to singular meaning but a matrix of social relationship continually contested and reproduced by both human and non-human actors. Therefore, the young living alone has experienced moving across the border between‘home’and‘homeless’. Second, young people living alone make relationships beyond the physical boundary of house and it provide them to feeling at home even though social practices perform outside the home. In order to coping with the spatial and temporal challenges of adapting to new home and to changes in the life course, young people compress their daily practives called ‘home-making’ at home. One is eating practice and the other is leisure activity. In the process of shopping-cooking-eating, the young utilize the technologies and materials as an alterative strategy of particular challenges. They do grocery shopping by mobile media, cook a meal by ‘simplication’ and ‘externalization’ strategies, and separate eating place usually using things instead of room. For these strategies, young people need to accumulate domestic technologies and other material goods and to change daily pattern. Consequently, spatial rearrangement and the resequencing and fragmentation of time-oriented domestic organization are inevitable. The leisure activities that young people perform in their home are mainly using mobility to relate to other places and people. In addition to interactive media such as phone calls, video calls, and SNS messengers, social relationships are established at home through one-way media such as blogs, cafes, YouTube videos and dramas. Nevertheless these interactions give a sense of emotional bonding to the young, they often make their homes in an alternative place outside the house, such as cafes and gyms due to the physical and emotional constraints within the house. This study is significant in showing young adults are active actors making their homes through alternative practices and their home contain heterogeneous meaning while the existing researches merely described as a problematic place. Furthermore, it is meaningful not only to show the human actors involved in home-making practice but also to reveal the non-human actors who have been ignored. This approach offers a more dynamic engagement with home Meanwhile, this paper suggest not to think of one-person household as ‘intermediate households’ between the parental home and a possible new family home and not to understand their experiences based on normative assumptions about patterns of leaving home. Instead, it is necessary to try to understand the nature of young people’s housing needs, recognition of independence, constraints and desires related to the home, consumption propensity and everyday practices. It will contribute to understand not only young adults living alone but also social change related to the home today. In Korean society, the meaning of home is changing especially around the young adults, but the single-household’home is still recognized as a deficient place. However, as the type of household is reorganized as a single household over the nuclear family, the discussion about what is a normative home will be accelerated. In this regard, this study is expect to contribute to the direction and contents of Korea’s policy for young adults.-
