Abstract
;Transition to adulthood in adolescents with developmental disabilities is a process of adaptation to new roles, responsibilities and new service systems for students and families. For successful transition, the efforts should be made to develop intensive transition plans through the collaboration between students, families, teachers, and other conversion service professionals before the end of the public education system. Although various types of transition programs were being carried out based on the importance of such transition plans in the secondary special education field, transition outcomes after postsecondary are still challenging. Despite the fact that the family involvement is a key element of effective transition education, the results from the analysis according to Kohler 's transition program taxonomy pointed out that many of the transition programs which were carried out in education field lack of family involvement. In addition, the evidence-based practice to increase family involvement were also difficult to be identified. Family involvement during transition planning is a necessary element for improving transition outcome. Therefore, by empowering students with disabilities and their families, it is necessary to support them to be taken part in the transition planning process actively. In this study, transition program was developed, which consisted of 2 tracks (track 1 is for students with developmental disabilities, track 2 is for their families). Track 1(program for students) aims to help high school students with developmental disabilities to prepare their own postsecondary career with a positive self-awareness and self-determination, Track 2(program for family caregiver) aims to support families to collect information on transition and explore community resources. To investigate the effectiveness of the program, 20 high school students with developmental disabilities who are enrolled in special classes in Gyeonggi-do, and their 20 caregivers were recruited and assigned to experimental group and control group by 10 respectively. Students and families in the experimental group participated respectively in programs consisting of 9 sessions of student program and 6 sessions of family program. Detailed contents of the student program(Track 1) include self-understanding for positive self-concept formation, understanding of changes to be faced during adulthood (employment, education, legal rights, and residential areas), and planning for the their own future. The intervention was conducted by a researcher once a week for 50 minutes during the school day. Detailed contents of family program(Track 2) include improving positive expectations for their children, providing various information about transition areas(employment, education, housing, marriage, independence, and legal rights), and exploring community resources. The intervention was conducted biweekly by the researcher and each session was operated by implementing one-to-one strategy for 60~90 minutes to respond individualized needs and characteristics in each family. In order to investigate the effects on self-determination, career decision self-efficacy and family empowerment in the students and their families of experimental group, an Mann-Whitney U test was performed on the differences between pre- and post-test scores of experimental group and control group. In addition, individual interviews were conducted with only those who wish to participate in interview to analyze the experiences and perceptions of the transition preparation process and family empowerment process qualitatively. Also, the field notes collected cumulatively during the program were also analyzed as qualitative data. The results of the study were as follows: First, the effect of the transition support program for students and families on the self-determination of the high school students with developmental disabilities showed that the self determination rated by students themselves and teachers has no significant difference compared with those of control group. However, in the results rated by family caregivers, the overall self-determination of the students increased significantly after the program participation. This result indicates that the transition support program for students and family affected positively the self-determination of students with disabilities. Second, the effects of the transition support program on the career decision-making self-efficacy of high school students with developmental disabilities were no significant difference between pre-and post- intervention by both groups. This means that the transition support program has not affected for career decision-making self efficacy in students with disabilities. Interestingly, the experimental group scores tended to increase for all sub domains after intervention but the control group scores tended to slightly decrease for all sub areas. Third, the level of family empowerment of family members who participated in the transition support program showed a statistically significant increase compared with that of control group.. In particular, statistically significant improvements were observed in 2 sub-areas(system advocacy and knowledge), but the change in the other 2 areas(competence and self-efficacy) were not statistically significant. This shows that the program has had a positive impact on the family's overall family empowerment and some sub-areas. Fourth, as a result of qualitative analyses on experiences and perceptions in the transition preparation process and the family empowerment process during the program, 5 main themes and 11 sub-themes emerged: Pre-experiences related to transition(theme 1), Active efforts for transition preparation(theme 2), Changes in perceptions and capacities by the family efforts(theme 3), Program characteristics and helpful factors(theme 4), and Support needs to transition(theme 5). Each topic showed the change of time according to before, during, and after participation in the program, and also showed the factors influencing the leaping process of the family and the support needs for the whole transition preparation process. The results of the study showed that the transition support program for students and families affected the improvement of students' self-determination and the one sub-area of career decision making self-efficacy. Also the results figured out that the program affected the improvement of overall level of family empowerment. In addition, the process of transition preparation and family empowerment process could be explored by analysing the qualitative data. This study developed and implemented a program that takes into account the areas of competency enhancement needed for high school students with developmental disabilities and their families to prepare successful transition. The significance of this study is that it applies the one-to-one strategy in implementing the intervention so that it can flexibly adapt to the unique needs and characteristics of each family preparing for the transition to adulthood. In future research, it will be necessary to extend the intervention sessions so that the youth and their families can collect the needed information and empowering themselves to prepare for the successful transition. Also, It is necessary to establish institutional arrangement that can provide effective transition supports by introducing transition coordinator/transition specialists who have professional in transition process. In addition, it could be possible to develop a combined program which includes the merits of flexibility and responsiveness of one-to-one strategy and the advantages of a method of groups to form a solidarity among families. By developing the program which combined advantages of different program formats, it is also needed to verify the effectiveness thoroughly.
