Abstract
It is commonly known that a child's self-esteem, ego-resilience, and emotional issues are affected by parenting style. This study has analyzed if those psychological variables have mediated effect in parenting style in low-income-family affecting child's adaptation to school life. Through this, it searched for what variable would it be to buffer the negative effect derived from adversity, and to help a child's successful adaptation and development. Also, it first classified different groups according to the level of adaptation to school, and how different those mediating variables are in the relationship between low-income-parents' way of parenting and a child's adaptation, or how differently those variables affects. It further suggests possible space for educational and counseling intervention for children from low-income-family to successfully stay in school, through deeper understanding on what character the 'Resilient group' children, who grow from low-income environment yet well-adapted to school have. Here are the study subjects: first of all, do psychological variables, such as self-esteem, ego-resilience, and emotional issues have mediated effects on low-income parents' parenting style affecting a child's adaptation to school? Second, are the mediating variables different in resilient group and vulnerable group? In order to find answer for this, this study analyzed the 7th year(2016) data of Grade 1 student from Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey panel. It defined children from families that are less than 60% of median income in the year 2016 and categorized them as 'resilient group' and 'vulnerable group'. It is analyzed by SPSS 21.0 and Mplus 6.0 in following methods. First, it took frequency analysis to find out the subjects' demographics. Second, it extracted internal consistency reliability Cronbach’s α to prove the reliability of measurement tool. Third, it took descriptive statistics analysis on main variables such as positive and negative parenting style, self-esteem, ego-resilience, emotional issues, and adaptability, and sorted groups according to children's school life adaptation level. Also, it took correlation analysis to find out relevance among each variables, and extracted Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. Fourth, it took path analysis to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem, ego-resilience, and emotional issues in parenting style affecting child's school adaptability, and also analyzed the effectiveness of path and investigated the model's goodness of fit. By Bootstrapping method, it verified the statistical significance of indirect effect. Results are following: First, it verified mediating effect of whole children group from low-income-family. Positive parenting style has meaningful and direct effect on child's adaptability to school, and meaningful and indirect effect on self-esteem and ego-resilience. Also, Negative parenting style works the same way, directly and indirectly on child's adaptability to school. Which means, self-esteem and ego-resilience has mediating effect on correlation between positive parenting style and child's adaptability to school, and only the self-esteem has mediating effect on correlation between negative parenting style and child's adaptability to school. Second, it verified the mediating effect of the resilient group. This group only has ego-resilience in the correlation between positive parenting style and adaptability. Third, it verified the mediating effect of vulerable group from low-income-family. In this group, only the self-esteem has mediating effect on negative parenting style affecting adaptability. Lastly, this study suggested the importance of educational and counseling intervention to help children who are going through poverty to successfully adapt to school, with mediating variable analysis among whole children group from low-income-family, resilient group, and vulnerable group.
