동물을 대하는 인간의 이중적 태도

Abstract

‘동물’이라는 단어를 떠올리면 우리는 어떤 것을 느낄 수 있을까? 연구자는 강아지와 고양이 등 애완동물이 떠오르며 귀여움과 웃음이 연상된다. 어떤 사람들은 ‘동물적’이라는 표현에서 시작하여 야만, 혹은 민첩함을 떠올릴 것이다. 그렇다면, 과거로부터 우리 인간에게 학대당하고 있는 가축과 그 이외의 동물들에 대해서 떠올릴 사람은 얼마나 될까? 아마 많지 않을 것이다. 우리 주위에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 애완동물이나 캐릭터의 모티브가 되는 동물은 우리와 친숙하고 애정의 대상이 되지만, 셀 수 없이 많은 동물들은 인간의 욕심을 채우기 위한 수단으로 이용되고 있다. 본 연구자는 이를 통해 우리의 이중성에 대해서 조명하고 표현함으로써 우리가 들여다보려 노력하지 않는 불편한 진실에 대해서 이야기하고자 한다. 공장식 축산으로 인한 동물의 권리 침해나 동물 살해 행위 등 인간의 동물 학대는 지구 수많은 곳에서 행해지고 있다. 이는 비단 특별한 경우에서뿐만 아니라, 우리 주위에서 어렵지 않게 찾아볼 수 있다. 이러한 여러 가지 예를 돌아보며, 동물 학대가 만연하며 용납되고 있는 현실의 원인을 역사적 및 철학적 기반을 통해 찾아보았다. 동물에 대한 이중적 태도는 초기 인류의 행동에서부터 기원을 찾을 수 있었고, 가축 문화가 발달함에 따라 인간과 동물이 수직적 관계를 띄게 되며, 이로 인해 학대는 만연하게 자행되기 시작하여 오늘날에 이르렀다. 이러한 문화가 가능하게 된 데에는, 자신이 속한 집단이, 이 경우에는 인간이 다른 종에 비해 우월하다고 생각하는 인간중심주의와 종차별주의가 사상적 기반이 되었음을 확인하고, 이 사상들에 대해서 분석해보았다. 본 연구자는 동물을 대하는 인간의 이중성에 대해서 여러 가지 관점에서 살펴보고, 결국 이러한 이중성으로 인해서 동물이 처한 현실과 이중성 자체에 대한 비판을 주제로 작업을 진행하였다. 강한 표현이나 직접적이거나 자극적인 표현보다는 시각적으로 귀엽거나 예쁜 이미지를 통해 작품을 구성하였고, 이러한 의도를 뒷받침하기 위해 우리 인간에게는 귀여움의 상징인 토끼를 주된 소재로 사용하였다. 이러한 작품 구성을 통해서, 연구를 진행하며 본 연구자가 느꼈던 측은함과 안타까움, 그리고 우리 스스로에 대한 무서움과 반성을 많은 사람과 공유하고자 하였다. 이 연구는 특히, 동물을‘사랑’하면서도 동물들이 겪는 고통을 외면하고, 오히려 부추기고 있는 우리의 이중성에 대해서 이야기하는 것을 중심으로 진행하였다. 이를 통해서, 본 연구자가 느꼈던 감정을 공유함에서 나아가 동물들이 처한 현실과 우리 인간의 이중성에 대한 경각심을 일깨우고자 한다. 궁극적으로, 우리 인간이 진정으로 동물의 입장에서 동물을 위하고 보호하려 노력할 수 있는 시간이 오길 바라는 마음을 연구에 담아내고자 하였다.;When you see the word ‘animal’, what can you think? Some people including me can think of pets like dogs and cats and also revoke the charm and smile. Others, starting from the word ‘animal instinct’, they can think of brutal and agility. Then, how many of us can think of domestic and other animals that have been mistreated from long past to present? Maybe there are not many. Pets, which can be seemed for many times around us and some animals that can be motive of cute characters are familiar and loved by us, but countlessly many animals are used for fulfilling human greed. By this research, I want to deal with this uncomfortable truth that we don’t want a closer look, by highlighting the human duality towards animals. The animal abusing of human like the infringement of animal rights by factory farming system and animal killing and other actions are implemented in many parts of world. This can be seen not only in dark world but also around us. I checked some examples of this and analyze the reason why these actions are allowed and frequent on historical and philosophical basis. The human duality towards animal is rooted in the actions of early humans and as domestication had been widely spread, human and other animals got vertical relationship. Then abusing had been spreaded and it comes to present. The anthropocentrism and the speciesism which is the thinking that the group which oneself is contained, in this case human group is superior to other animals made this situation possible, so I analyzed about these thinking. After I analyzed about human duality toward animals by many perspectives, I made the reality of animals caused by human duality and duality itself as subject of my works. I composed works by cute and pretty images by eyesight, rather than strong and direct images. For backing up this intention, I used rabbit that is symbol of cute to us as main subject. By this composition, I intended to share the feeling of pathetic, sadness and fear/ regret towards ourselves that I could feel during this work. This research is focused on talking about our duality that disregard the pain of animals and instead incite it, even if we ‘love’ animals. By this, I intended to share the feeling and inspire people about the reality of animals by human duality. Ultimately, I tried to contain the desire that at some time, we, human can think of the animals’ side and try to protect their rights.
