민화의 현대적 표현을 통한 시각 표현 연구

Abstract

민화는 오랜 역사를 통해 형성된 우리 선조들의 삶과 살아감에 있어서 가지는 염원들과 미의식이 담겨있는 중요한 문화 자산이다. 민화는 전통 회화와 다르게 낙관이 없고 교육을 제대로 받지 못한 사람들로부터 그려졌다는 이유만으로 저평가 받아왔던 시기도 있었지만, 많은 민화 연구학자들로부터 우리 선조들의 전통적인 삶과 사회, 철학, 종교, 정서 등이 드러남을 인정받게 되면서 하나의 회화 장르로 발전했다. 이러한 민화는 조형적, 내용적, 상징적 특성이 나타나며 그 중에서도 상징성에는 수(壽), 복(福), 강(康), 녕(寧), 부(富), 귀(貴) 등의 주제로 우리가 삶을 살아감에 있어서 바라는 염원들이 녹아들어 있다. 특히 길상적인 상징은 민화에서 가장 많이 나타나는 특징으로 부귀영화, 무병장수와 같은 주제들이 드러나며 다양한 소재 안에서 복을 바라고, 건강에 대한 염원을 담아내고, 일상에 행복을 찾고 있다. 이는 양반계층이 추구했던 미의식이 담긴 전통회화 미술작품과는 다르게 친근하고 거리낌 없이 자유롭게 표현되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 본고는 연구의 대상인 민화에 대한 전체적인 이론적 배경을 살펴보고, 민화의 조형적인 특성, 내용적인 특성, 상징적인 특성을 고찰하였다. 민화가 현대에 들어 어떻게 변용되고 새롭게 활용되었는지에 현대 민화 작가들의 작품을 바탕으로 제작 의도와 방법과 특징을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 오래된 민화의 도상을 차용하고 다양하게 재해석하며 자유롭게 재창조하는 다양한 방향성을 고찰할 수 있었다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 민화에서 나타나는 상징성과 우리의 정서와 맞닿아 있는 의미들을 이끌어내 이를 시각화한 작품 연구를 진행했다. 기존 전통 민화의 상징성과 관련된 연구들을 바탕으로 작품의 주제와 소재들을 선정하였으며, 이를 변용하고 단순화시켜 하나하나의 원초적인 상징성을 드러내는 소재를 활용하여 한 장의 작품으로 완성시키는 단계로 현대적인 새로운 민화를 제작하였다. 기존의 민화에서 살펴볼 수 있는 특성을 살리면서 구조적인 짜임을 통해 자유로운 표현방식의 조형성을 드러내고자 했다. 따라서, 본 연구는 민화를 활용하여 현대적인 작품을 제작하고 본인의 주관적인 시각에 따른 민화의 새로운 표현과 의미를 모색하고자 한다. 이를 기반으로 민화에 담긴 우리의 염원은 무엇인가에 대해 생각해보고 추구하는 상징성의 이미지를 민화로서 표현할 수 있는 기회를 가지고자 하며, 민화에 나타나는 의미를 강조시켜 다양한 방법으로 이를 표현할 수 있음을 나타내고자 했다. 또한, 전통 민화에 대한 재인식과 더불어 차별화된 새로운 민화의 디자인 형태를 제작함으로써 앞으로 나아갈 민화의 창의적인 발전을 기대하고, 본 연구의 결과물인 작품이 향후 전통 민화의 현대적인 변용의 유용한 작품 사례로 활용되어지길 기대한다. ;Folk paintings, which have been formed throughout long history, are important cultural assets containing the aspirations and aesthetics of lives of Korean ancestors. Unlike traditional paintings, folk paintings used to be undervalued because they were drawn by people who were not well educated, without signature. However, as many folk painting scholars acknowledged the traditional life, society, philosophy, religion, and emotions of the Korean ancestors exposed in folk paintings, they developed into a painting genre. The folk paintings, which have formative, substantial, and symbolic characteristics, especially imply wishes in life under the themes of longevity, luck, well-being, wealth in their symbolic ways. In particular, auspicious signs are salient characteristics of folk paintings; they visualize the origins of luck, health, and happiness in everyday life based on various subjects related to topics including wealthy, glory, and health and longevity. Contrary to the aesthetics of traditional painting arts pursued by the noble class, they are expressed freely and friendly. In this regard, this study explored the comprehensive theoretical background of folk paintings, and examined their formative, substantial, and symbolic characteristics. Considering how folk paintings have been transformed and applied in the contemporary era, this study investigated the intention, methods, and characteristics of the works of contemporary folk painting artists. Therefore, a variety of directions for creatively borrowing, reinterpreting, and recreating old folk paintings were understood. Moreover, the study searched for the visualization of the symbolism in folk paintings and the meanings that aligned with the sentiments of Korea. The subjects and materials were selected on the basis of the existing studies on the symbolism in the folk paintings. By transforming and simplifying them, a new contemporary folk painting was produced in the process of completing one piece of work using materials expressing the original symbolism of each component. That is, this study aimed to reveal the formative form of free expressions through the structural composition and the existing features of the folk paintings. Therefore, this study created a contemporary work using the folk paintings and sought new expressions and meanings of the folk paintings in accordance with the artist. This study provided an opportunity to think about the desires of Koreans in the folk paintings and to show the images of the symbolism pursued in the folk paintings. Furthermore, it emphasized the meanings of the folk paintings and demonstrated that they can be expressed in various ways. The re-recognition of the traditional folk paintings and the differentiated design of new folk paintings contributed to the creative development of the folk paintings in the future. It is hoped that the work, which is the result of this study, can be a useful example of the contemporary transformations of the traditional folk paintings in the future.
