여성의 탈 객체화된 신체 의식에 대한 시각 표현 연구

Abstract

여성의 신체는 가장 쉽게 이용될 수 있는 사회문화적 요소로, 사회가 추구하고 있는 가치관과 밀접한 상응 관계가 있으며 이러한 관계 속에서 개인의 신체가 외부로 받아온 기준에 민감하게 반응하도록 한다. 현대 사회에 팽배한 외모 지상주의와 이를 기반으로 만들어진 이상적인 신체상은 개인의 가치관과 신체를 바라보는 태도에 영향을 미치는데, 이 과정에서 개인은 자신의 신체와 이상적인 신체상 사이에 대한 끊임없는 비교를 지속하게 된다. ‘표준’이 되어버린 ‘이상적’인 신체는 곧 자신을 대표하는 하나의 능력이자 지위로 자리 잡게 되고, 이상적인 신체상에 도달하고자 하는 여성의 욕구는 점점 강화된다. 이러한 욕구는 개인이 자신의 신체를 ‘객체화’하도록 유도하고 있다. 본 연구는 여성의 신체를 향한 통제와 규범에 문제의식을 느껴 ‘탈 객체화된 신체 의식’ 개념을 제안하였으며, 위의 개념에 데포르마시옹(déformation) 기법을 접목한 여성 캐릭터를 만들어 연구 작품을 제작하였다. 탈 객체화된 신체 의식을 내면화한 여성 캐릭터는 가슴과 둔부, 복부 등의 신체 굴곡을 과장하여 표현하고 있으며, 흔히 ‘아름답지 않다’고 생각하는 살의 접히는 부분과 울퉁불퉁한 피부 외곽을 가감 없이 표현하였다. 연구자는 해당 캐릭터가 등장하는 다수의 선행 연구를 진행하였고, 최종 연구 작품 <운동하는 여자>를 제작하였다. <운동하는 여자>는 배구와 피겨 스케이팅, 수영하는 여성의 모습을 담은 연작으로, 이상적인 아름다움을 가진 신체에 구속되지 않으며, 대상화되지 않는 자유롭고 건강한 여성의 신체를 표현하는 것에 집중하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 사회문화적으로 형성된 신체 표준상에 개인을 맞추는 것이 아닌 개인이 주체가 되는 신체 경험이 중요하다는 것을 시각화한다.;Women’s bodies are the most easily used socio-cultural element, which has a close correspondence with the value pursued by the society. This correspondence makes the individual bodies sensitive to external criteria. Lookism prevailing in the contemporary society and the consequential ideal body images influence individual values and attitudes toward bodies. In this process, individuals continue to make constant comparisons between one’ body and the ideal body images.The 'ideal' body that has become 'standard' becomes the power and status to represent the individual, and women’s desire to reach the ideal body images is gradually strengthened. This desire leads an individual to "objectify" one’s body. This study that critically examines the control and norms over women's bodies, proposes the concept of ‘de-objectified body consciousness’. Based on the concept, a female character using the déformation technique was creased. The character’s body curves of breast, hips, abdomen that internalizes the de-objectified body consciousness is exaggeratedly expressed. In particular, the folded parts of the flesh and the rugged skin surface, which are often considered 'not beautiful' are expressed without any adjustment. Reviewing a number of the previous studies in which such characters appeared, the artist produced the final project, <Woman in Motion>. <Exercise Women> was a series of women playing volleyball, figure skating, and swimming. It focused on the expressions of free and healthy female bodies that were not bound to the idealistic, objectified beauty. In conclusion, this study visualized the importance of the physical experiences of individual as subjects rather than tailoring the individuals to the socio-cultural body standards.
