Rebecca Clarke의 Sonata for Viola and Piano에 대한 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 초반에 활동했던 영국 출신의 여성 작곡가인 레베카 클라크 (Rebecca Clarke, 1886-1979)의 생애와 작품의 특징을 알아보고 그녀의 작품인 「비올라와 피아노를 위한 소나타 (Sonata for Viola and Piano, 1919) 」의 배경과 악곡 분석을 통해 작품의 음악적 특징을 분석하고자한다 레베카 클라크는 여성으로 활동하기 힘들었던 시기인 제 1차 세계대전과 제 2차 세계대전 사이에 활동하던 작곡가이자 비올라 연주자로 이름을 알렸다. 영국에서 출생하였으나 작곡 활동은 주로 미국에서 이뤄졌고 미국의 버크셔 실내악 작곡 콩쿠르에 비올라 소나타를 출품해 공동 1등을 수상함으로 작곡활동을 인정받았다. 본 논문에서 다루는 비올라 소나타 외에 다수의 실내악곡을 남겼고 자신이 연주하던 악기인 비올라 작품이 그녀의 곡에서 큰 비중을 차지한다. 레베카 클라크의 작품 중 가장 잘 알려진 작품으로 꼽히는 〈Sonata for Viola and Piano〉는 비올라 연주자가 직접 작곡한 곡인만큼 비올라의 특색이 잘 나타나는 작품이다. 본 연구는 레베카 클라크의 생애와 작품의 특징, 〈Sonata for Viola and Piano〉를 작품 배경과 악장별 분석을 통해 알아보고자 한다.;The study examines the life and works of Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), a British female composer who played viola in the early 20th century, and analyze her work, 「Sonata for Viola and Piano」 the musical characteristics of her works. Rebecca Clark became known as a composer and viola player who worked between World War I and World War II, the time when the women were restricted in normal society. Born in the United Kingdom, her composing activities were mainly performed in the United States, and she awarded the first prize in the composition of the viola sonata in the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival Competition in the United States. In addition to the viola sonata covered in this paper, she has left many chamber music pieces, and the viola, her own instrument, effected large part of her music. 〈Sonata for Viola and Piano〉, one of Rebecca Clark's most well-known works, is a piece of viola that has been written by a violist. It consists of three movements and was composed based on late Romanticism, Impressionism, and Nationalism. Although she has a classic style, she has shown her own musical world through the use of whole-tone scale, pentatonic scale, chromatic scale, and mode used in the 20th century music. This study examines the life and works of Rebecca Clark, 〈Sonata for Viola and Piano〉, through the background of works and movements.
