Abstract

본 논문에서는 필자의 석사과정 졸업연주 프로그램 중 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695)의 성악곡 〈음악은 잠시 동안 (Music for a While)〉, 〈음악이 사랑의 양식이라면 (If Music be the Food of Love)〉, 〈장미보다 더 감미롭게 (Sweeter than roses)〉와 가브리엘 포레(Gabriel Fauré, 1845-1924)의 연가곡 《다정한 노래 (La Bonne Chanson, Op.61)》중 〈하이얀 달이 숲속에 빛나며 (La lune blanche luit dans les bois)〉, 〈네가 가 버리기 전에 (Av ant que tu ne t'en ailles)〉, 제8곡〈그렇지? (N'est-ce pas?)〉, 〈겨울은 끝났다 (L'hiver a cessé)〉 그리고 리하르트 슈트라우스(Richard Strauss, 1864- 1949)의 연가곡 《다섯 개의 작은 노래 (Fünf kleine Lieder, Op.69)》중 〈별 (Der Stern)〉, 〈술잔 (Der Pokal)〉, 〈한결같은 (Einerlei)〉, 〈궂은 날씨 (Schlechtes Wetter)〉를 중심으로 각 작곡가의 생애와 작품의 특징에 대해 살펴보고 곡에서 나타나는 음악적 특징을 분석하였다. 퍼셀은 영국을 대표하는 바로크 시대의 작곡가이다. 〈음악은 잠시 동안 (Music for a While)〉, 〈음악이 사랑의 양식이라면 (If Music be the Food of Love)〉, 〈장미보다 더 감미롭게 (Sweeter than roses)〉는 퍼셀의 음악 양식을 잘 보여주고 있는 대표적 성악곡이다. 퍼셀은 시어의 의미를 표현하는 가사 그리기 기법을 자주 사용하였고, 장식음, 멜리즈마, 동형진행 등으로 가사의 의미와 감정, 곡의 분위기를 강조하였다. 포레는 프랑스 가곡의 주요한 작곡가 중 한 명으로 멜로디를 진정한 예술가곡 형식으로 만들었다. 《다정한 노래 (La Bonne Chanson, Op.61)》는 상징주의 시인 폴 베를렌느(Paul Verlaine, 1844-1896)의 시집 《다정한 노래 (La Bonne Chanson)》중 9곡을 골라 만든 연가곡으로 사랑하는 연인을 향한 마음을 아름답게 표현한 작품이다. 포레는 베를렌느의 시에서 나타나는 은유와 상징이 있는 시어에 선법과 모티브를 사용하여 아름다운 선율을 만들어냈다. 슈트라우스는 독일 후기 낭만주의 음악의 대가이다. 《다섯 개의 작은 노래 (Fünf kleine Lieder Op.69)》는 별, 축제, 사랑, 날씨 등의 다양한 주제를 가지고 있다. 각각의 시의 내용과 분위기에 따라 슈트라우스 특유의 화려하면서도 세련된 멜로디와 독주곡으로도 손색없는 아름답고 독립된 반주의 하모니가 돋보이는 작품이다. ;This thesis discusses the musical characteristics of the works by Henry Purcell(1659-1695), Gabriel Fauré(1845-1924), and Richard Strauss(1864-1949). In its analysis, this thesis will refer to the following pieces; 〈Music for a While〉, 〈If Music be the Food of Love〉, 〈Sweeter than Roses〉 by Purcell, 〈La lune blanche luitdans les bois〉, 〈Avant que tu ne t’en ailles〉, 〈N’est-ce pas?〉, 〈L'hiver a cessé〉 from Faure’s song cycle 〈La Bonne Chanson, Op.61〉, and 〈Der Stern〉, 〈Der Pokal〉, 〈Einerlei〉, 〈Schlechtes Wetter〉 from Strauss’ 〈Fünf kleine Lieder, Op.69〉. Focusing on these works, this thesis will analyze each composer’s career and musical style manifested in their composition. Henry Purcell is an emblematic English composer of the Baroque period. 〈Music for a While〉, 〈If Music be the Food of Love〉, and 〈Sweeter than Roses〉 are Purcell’s exemplary vocal works that best represent his musical style. Purcell frequently uses word paintings – a technique of musically reflecting the literal meaning of the lyrics – and also uses melodic ornaments, melisma, and sequence in order to accentuate the lyrical meaning, emotions, and the atmosphere of the song. Faure is one of the major French composers of the French art song who defined the mélodie as a proper form of the art song. His work 〈La Bonne Chanson, Op.61〉– which is written based on the nine selected poems from symbolist poet Paul Verlaine’s collection of poems 〈La Bonne Chanson〉– is a piece that beautifully portrays one’s affection for a lover. Drawing upon Verlaine’s metaphor and symbolism, Faure creates a beautiful melody using prepositions and motifs. Strauss is a virtuoso of the late Romantic German music. His work 〈Fünf kleine Lieder Op.69〉 adopts various subject matters such as the stars, festivals, love, and weather. It is an exemplary work that features Strauss’ colorful yet refined melody and beautiful accompaniment which is comparable to a solo piece.
