성인의 반려동물 상실 경험과 복합 비애

Abstract

본 연구는 국내 반려인들의 반려동물 상실 경험을 살펴보고 반려동물 애도의 맥락에서 복합 비애에 영향을 미치는 위험요인은 어떤 것이 있는지 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 반려동물 애도 척도(Pet Bereavement Questionnaire: PBQ)와 반려동물 애착 척도(Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale: LAPS)를 번안하였으며, 최근 10년 이내에 반려동물을 안락사한 경험이 있고 복합 비애 반응을 한 가지 이상 경험하고 있는 성인 160명을 대상으로 애도 반응, 복합 비애, 부정적 비애 인지, 반려동물 애착, 성인 애착, 심리적 부적응을 측정하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 번안한 척도에 대한 탐색적 요인 분석 결과, 반려동물 애도 척도는 ‘비애/슬픔’, ‘트라우마’, ‘죄책감’의 3요인 구조로 나타났으며, 반려동물 애착 척도의 경우 1요인 구조로 나타났다. 둘째, 상실이 갑작스러웠던 경우 반려동물 애도, 복합 비애, 부정적 비애 인지 수준이 유의하게 높았다. 현재 다른 반려동물을 키우고 있는 경우 상실한 반려동물에 대한 애착 수준이 유의하게 높았으며, 복합 비애, 심리적 부적응 수준은 유의하게 낮았다. 또한 반려동물 관련 온‧오프라인 커뮤니티에 소속되어 있는 경우 반려동물 애도, 복합 비애, 부정적 비애 인지, 심리적 부적응, 반려동물 애착 수준이 유의하게 높았다. 셋째, 상실 원인에 따라 반려동물 애도 수준에 차이가 나타났다. 반려동물을 급성질환으로 상실한 경우 노화로 상실한 경우에 비해 반려동물 애도 수준이 유의하게 높았다. 넷째, 반려동물 애도, 일반 애도, 부정적 비애 인지, 복합 비애, 심리적 부적응 간에 높은 정적 상관이 있으며, 반려동물 애착은 성인 애착과 낮은 정적 상관을 보였다. 경과시간은 일반 애도, 부정적 비애 인지, 복합 비애, 심리적 부적응과 낮은 부적 상관을 나타냈고, 사회적 지지와 반려동물 애도, 일반 애도, 복합 비애, 부정적 비애 인지, 심리적 부적응 간에는 유의한 상관이 나타나지 않았다. 마지막으로, 복합 비애에는 부정적 비애 인지, 심리적 부적응, 반려동물 애도 순으로 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 부정적 비애 인지가 반려동물을 안락사로 상실한 반려인들의 복합 비애 반응에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 반려동물 상실 경험에 대한 탐색적 연구를 통해 반려동물 애도의 맥락에서도 부정적 인지가 복합 비애의 위험요인으로 작용함을 발견했으며, 이를 바탕으로 반려인들이 경험하는 애도 반응에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고 적절한 상담 개입의 방향성을 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다. ;The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of the death of a companion animal and the risk factor of complicated grief. For this study, Pet Bereavement Questionnaire(PAQ) originally developed by Hunt and Padilla(2006) and Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale(LAPS) developed by Johnson, Garrity & Stallones(1992) went through a translation and back-translation procedure to be adapted. 160 adults who euthanized their companion animal within 10 years and experienced at least one complicated grief reaction completed Pet Bereavement Questionnaire(PAQ), Texas Revised Inventory of Grief(TRIG), Prolonged Grief-13(PG-13), Grief Cognitions Questionnaire(GCQ), Brief Symptom Inventory-18(BSI-18), Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale(LAPS), and Korean version of Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire-Revised(ECR-R). The findings are as follows: First, the results of exploratory factor analysis showed that PAQ consisted of three factors and LAPS consisted of one factor. Second, there was a significant difference in the mean of pet bereavement, complicated grief and negative cognitions depending on whether the death was sudden. There was a significant difference in the mean of pet attachment, complicated grief and psychological maladjustment depending on whether they had another companion animal. And depending on whether they belonged to the community, there was a significant difference in the mean of pet bereavement, complicated grief, negative cognitions and psychological maladjustment. Third, there was a significant difference in the mean of pet bereavement depending on the cause of loss. Fourth, the correlation analysis showed that pet bereavement, negative cognitions, complicated grief, and psychological maladjustment were positively correlated. Time since the loss was negatively correlated with negative cognitions, complicated grief and psychological maladjustment. But social support was not correlated with any variables. Lastly, the results of multiple regression analysis showed that negative cognitions had the biggest impact on complicated grief. By exploring the experience of the death of a companion animal, this study revealed that negative cognitions were an important risk factor for complicated grief. Also, this study expanded the understanding of companion animal loss and related grief reaction. The implications and suggestions for future study were discussed.
