Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the politics of the irony of Yeom Sang-sup’s novel. In 1920s and 1930s, Yeom Sang-sup worked actively as a writer and published a number of prose, short stories, and novels. He embraced a lot of diverse ideas and developed his own individualistic ideas, while at the same time, he had a keen sense of reality. This study aims to reveal that the novel, which had not been paid much attention in the previous studies on the politics of Yeon Sang-Sup, was an effective device to reveal the political resistance of Yoon Sang-sup. Based on Schlegel 's romantic irony and Stirner' s individualistic anarchism, the study attempts to understand the thought and literature of Yeom Sang-sup. Romantic irony is a 'process' that antagonizes between self-creation and self-destruction within the relationship with the object (reality), which can not reach the goal of unity of subjectivity and objectivity. Stirner's 'the ego' refers to an individual who is consistently liberated from the authority to 'alienate' himself and repeats the process of 're-occupying'. In particular, Stirner focused on the aspect of religion, society, and country that alienate individuals and emphasized the importance of 'rebellion'. The 'rebellion' which he pointed out is an act of self-elevation that gets rid of institutional authority that has eroded itself. He maintained individual freedom by emphasizing 'individuality' and 'rebellion', and did not lose objectivity by confronting the strength of institutional authority and weakness of individual. Therefore, the 'process' in which the characters in the novel are oriented toward the freedom of the individual can be interpreted as 'romantic irony'. Yeom Sang-sup reveals his concrete thoughts through prose. He believes that only those who have returned to the "law of nature" to develop his or her own individuality and personality, can lead a creative life and genuinely understand and respect others, sacrificing themselves for others. The reason why individuals deviated from this 'natural law' is that capitalism, patriarchy, and imperialism suppressed individuals in a materialistic way. Individuals who should be liberated from institutional authority are frustrated by material problems and human limitations as finite beings. This can be seen as the aspect of 'alienation' and 'self-destruction'. However, he does not stop there, rather, he attempts to 're-occupy' and 'self-creation' by 'rebellion'. Yeom Sang-sup claims that while the individual lives, they must do their best in this infinite "process," and that literature should help individuals in this "process." Therefore, a 'process' of 'alienation' and 're-occupation' appears in the long novel of Yeom Sang-sup. Individuals exhibit 'flexibility' in adapting to the institution in order to solve material problems, but if an individual loses his sense of balance, he or she will be easily subject to the danger of "compromise." During the colonial period, capitalist, patriarchal, and imperialist systems strongly suppressed individuals. Individuals who want to get out of the system cannot retain their own material foundation and this can be seen as one of the aspects of punishment of an individual who does not conform to 'society' as Stirner said. However, individuals who conformed to a certain system were equipped with ideas and wills to escape from the institutional authority and they also expressed their will in the form of death, art, and revolution. This aspect can be seen as a form of expressing personality and rebel against the system. Individuals, sometimes show themselves in aversion to oneself and censor of their ideals by recognizing their own inherent limitations. When this tendency intensifies, they become desperate to faithfully come to the 'process' of ideal pursuit. The characters in the novel recognize the limitations of individual, nation, and humanity through the experience of knowledge and life and face the risk of being buried in the impossibility of 'unification'. However, while recognizing the inherent limitations of human beings, they express love as "the ego" and participate in the "Egoist Union". At this time, not only the 'unity' of the intellectuals who have shown the system of suppressing the individual, but also the 'unity' of the individuals who have not clearly recognized the suppression of the system show the resistance to the system. The sincere love of those who do not internalize institutional authority becomes "unstable" by exceeding the system without even realizing it. Yeom Sang-sup acknowledges the way in which individuals are 'alienated' to live in reality. At the same time, he aims to capture the moments in which the individual's orientation is revealed, and ask the readers to express their personality and make constant efforts to live a life loving others. This shows that it has found the meaning of life in the perpetual process of ideological pursuit that antagonizes the flexible judgment of reality and the romantic will to escape from reality as an ironist bearing the attitude of 'romantic irony'. Considering the fact that an individual who intends to return to 'the law of nature' inevitably commits 'rebellion' against social institutions and systems, Yeom Sang-sup's novel insists on the reader to 'continue to rebel' with 'indirect means'.
