Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to trace a development of Charles Dickens’ corporeal imagination by closely examining the ways in which the process of capitalist modernization of Victorian England transfigures into various bodily images and metaphors in his writings. Although the previous criticism has focused on the eccentric bodily figuration of his characters, what has been neglected was a diachronic analysis that investigates gradual changes of his corporeal imagination that have appeared during his whole career. In this critical context, I aim to reevaluate the symbolic and thematic significance of the body in his writings by illuminating how Dickens’ market-city displays a myriad of bodily symptoms and images whose changes coincide with the changing mode of capitalism. Chapter 1 explores a vast field of Dickensian scholarship to see how the issues of the body, capitalist modernization, and Dickens’ journalist background can converge into his unique literary imagination. This chapter claims the writer’s interests on capitalist modernization that took place in the nineteenth century and proves that the body is used as a useful literary device to signify individuals’ struggles in this turbulent social change. Moreover, I suggest his hitherto-neglected early sketches as a reservoir of his bodily imagination with help of a recent critical attention to the sketch-writing practice that was popular in the early Victorian period. Chapter 2 studies Dickens’ first published work Sketches by Boz, a collection of his early urban sketches, to demonstrate the way in which the narrative of urban survival unfolds itself as a series of their bodily energies and motions. To do so, this chapter suggests two categories of bodily types—“the diseased bodies” and “the tactical bodies”—and investigates how the bodily conditions of individuals extends themselves to those of social/urban body. By doing so, this chapter claims the embryonic quality of Dickens’ 1830 sketches as to his corporeal imagination. Chapter 3 examines selected pieces of journalist sketches published in Household Words, a weekly magazine edited by Dickens himself in the 1850s. By doing so, this chapter examines how urbanites’ lifeless and mechanical movements express the intensified power of capitalist alienation conditioned by the establishment of the nationwide railway network. By focusing on a grotesque transposition of human and objects portrayed in these mid-career sketches, this chapter argues the surrealist representation of the body is used as an apt literary device to signal the reinforced psychological crisis of his urbanites. Chapter 4 investigates how the impressionistic, fragmentary bodily images develop into concrete characters and plots that actively engage with his fictional world. To do so, this chapter examines his last completed novel Our Mutual Friend, which squarely tackles the theme of capitalism and the body, so as to reconsider the status of the body in the context of the novel’s market-city. While shedding light on the dehumanizing tendency of capitalist system betrayed in filthy corpses, lifelessly commodified bodies, and grotesquely distorted bodies that fill up the city, this chapter also seeks for the possibilities of survival and human life in Jenny Wren’s dexterous embodied labour. In so doing, this last chapter attempts to demonstrate the way in which the motif of human body transforms into more sophisticated narratives and allegory, thereby witnessing how his bodily imagination culminates in his last completed fiction.
