Abstract
This thesis attempts to newly interpret Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (1899) and Doris Lessing’s “To Room Nineteen” (1963). Due to the common features in elaborating the development, both stories were neglected: for they set the protagonists who have already experienced marriage which is mostly regarded as the ultimate point of one’s development in the genre; and for they articulate suicide of the heroines while the traditional genre and its discourse highlight successful compromise between the individual and the society. However, it cannot be easily concluded that one’s development is completed with marriage, and in regard of the specific social circumstance of women that is different from men, women’s developmental narratives require the analysis based on the specific milieu and actualities women have faced. Therefore, partially adapting Lisa Downward’s analysis of female developmental plots as a spectrum, rather than as an established genre, is helpful to understand the complicated development depicted in The Awakening and “To Room Nineteen.” Hence, this study aims to investigate married women's development in their restricted circumstances under the social backdrops of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first chapter traces the establishment process of the notion of “development” which is the foundation of the Bildungsroman genre, and examines the discourse of the genre that posits male as the main protagonist. Thus it further explores the different aspects of feminist scholars’ analysis of female developmental plots. Moreover, since one’s development is greatly influenced by the social milieu in which one is placed, this chapter investigates the history and transition of the ideology of separate spheres, and thereby raises the need for a new method of analysis for approaching female developmental plots. The second chapter conducts in-depth analysis on how the operation of the separate spheres ideology hinges on the gender, and examines how its impact differs by the times. With this, this chapter traces married women’s actual lives and substantive statuses delineated in The Awakening and “To Room Nineteen,” and aims to grasp the difference and similarity between the two stories that were written in different centuries. The third chapter studies married women’s development processes in the two stories. Firstly, it analyzes the protagonists’ awakening to their subjection to the patriarchal ideology, and secondly, it tracks the protagonists’ escape from the “feminine role” prescribed onto them by the society at that time as a natural duty of women. Moreover, it argues that the core of the Bildungsroman genre is not the cohesion between the individual and society, but one’s cognizance of the real state of the society. Therefore, this chapter also investigates the protagonists’ recognition of the patriarchal system when they choose death, and interprets The Awakening and “To Room Nineteen” as developmental plots of married women. The fourth chapter once again emphasizes the realization of the protagonists of their possibility and limitation in the patriarchal society. Therefore, this chapter proposes that plots like The Awakening and “To Room Nineteen” where an individual accurately recognizes her limitations and potentials can also be included in the category of the Bildungsroman genre.
