Abstract
;This thesis is to consider theoretical background and formative expression methods, which are required to embody in formative works of art the images that comes to mind when the reacher observe and ponder on the cosmic space as a refuge for images. This is based on the view that contemplating nature and controling myself are the driving force of my life and the basis of my formative activities. As the modern society has rapidly moved into the digital information age, humanity, which has once been regarded as an universal and absolute value, is being marginalized. Contrary to the world expanding without boundaries, human experience and consciousness have gradually been standardized and Nature has descended to a target of possession and consumption. Human beings as members of society tend to be influenced by negative feelings such as anxiety, loneliness, alienation, and emptiness, without knowing their causes. Furthermore, in today's society the spaces that wounds can be healed and recovered are gradually disappeared. In this condition, the space for healing that the researcher found is an infinite universe. This is a space of sensibility that comforts me who is distressed from critical situation and inspires me with creative activities. The impression of the night sky is comfort, warmth, and serenity. The image of the object seen through eyes is combined with environmental factors including its meaning, time to see it, object is delivered to your mind and causes various emotions. That is to say, after being influenced by personal experience and the environment, the existence of the object is restructured. The feelings that engenders at that moment, do not dissipate but remain and banish negative ones from your mind. Formative work also has this kind of interactive meaning. For the researcher, art activities are a passage and channel to look deep into myself and self-control over my mind. Imagination, which becomes an impetus to creative activities to incorporate cosmic space into formative works, is one of the human mental abilities of transforming the images recognized through perception process. Gaston Bachelard's thinking that we get out of the present through imagining and are able to experience a new life, suggests imagination as a method that can balance the modern life which is ruled by reason. Imagination, along with impression, is an important method for modern people to heal their inner consciousness and enrich their mental world. It can be said that the universe, which becomes an object of impression and imagination, is the world itself that encompasses matter, time, and space in formative activities. The studies to disclose the existence of the universe as the world to which mankind belongs, have been done from various perspectives in each country. From an astronomical perspective, scientific technology has helped extend gradually the scope of observing outer space, whereas humankind lying at the center of the universe has become a tiny being. Mankind was born in the course of the formation and death of stars, and we may feel emotions of longing and warmth in the night sky. This emotional recovery is also shown in the process of formative activities. The repetition used as an representation technique in the researcher's works makes the artist concentrate on her action and have time to be immersed in conversation with herself. The repetition varies from layers in nature, such as the changes of seasons and night and day to layers in individuals, such as repetitive daily life and little habits. The repetition in formative art, especially, is one of the representation techniques used to visualize the works of art, so this technique enables the creator to extend the pictorial composition and new meanings. An artist's repetitive actions can contain her/his thinking so that they are essentially involved in the researcher's work. I may say that is the process of relaxation and healing, getting out of haunting anguish and thoughts through physical labor repeated for a certain period of time. This study is a process of reflecting in my works the lyrical sensibility aroused while watching the night sky. The imaginary universe I have conceived for a long time was a space that allowed one to float between celestial bodies, so that I could feel comfortable psychologically. The researcher's works of art, which have been produced through this process, are plane works that are embroidered of images of stars; three-dimensional works and installations that embody the astrospace in globular form. Black and white threads symbolizing darkness and light, Hanji (traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees) cord, and paper-wrapped-wire are repeatedly tied or woven to create a myriad of dots and lines in space. I gave shape to lights of twinkling stars in my embroidery works using those linear materials, and I made globular forms that represent completeness and eternity in my three-dimensional and installation works. And this process helps to redeem the durability and monotonous forms that have been regarded as the threshold of my formative works done since 2007. I think this is possible because I have changed the materials to Hanji cord and paper-wrapped-wire, knocking off previous creative process of composing forms using thread and wooden frame. I have learnt through this study that thinking about the universe and the production process became a major part of my life, awakening my inner consciousness. Rendering cosmic space in formative works is, for me, time to consider expressive actions and communicate with the object. An ordinary behavior of gazing into the night sky is connected to formative activity, thus linking to my developing life by looking deep into myself and controling my mind. And the technical problems found in this research process were solved by changing materials and compensating, which makes me technically free to express the near infinite universe. Like this, by expanding from plane to space, I can examine the boundless potentials in fiber formation. Lastly, I hope we realize that Nature and man are in a close relationship, and we recover genuine sensitivity with Nature and lead affluent lives in quality.
