흔들리는 정체성의 경험

Abstract

This thesis is a study of a troubled identity and the fear it causes. The researcher has questioned how negative feelings such as pain and fear from physical and psychological sufferings influence one’s identity. He found that one’s identity is easily affected by physical changes - especially those like deaths, illnesses and pain as they raise negative feelings. Sudden onsets of fear and pain cloud one’s judgment, obscure one’s senses, and blur the distinctions within one’s identity. The researcher examines the forms of the negative elements that blur the distinctions existing in a person and society and he attempts to study them by associating them with his own experiences. First, by studying Julia Kristeva’s concept of Abject, he examined how pain and fear influence our lives. Abject refers to things that are treated humbly so that one or society does not put importance and turn away but stays around while going across boundaries and pulling down borders. It breaks the boundaries kept for uniqueness and constancy, muddles orders, and makes one wander. From Abject, the researcher attempts to understand one who experiences a troubled identity and realizes that human beings experience changes of their identity instead of having one fixed identity. Moreover, by sublimating fear and panic from outside matters the researcher attempts to understand that every human being originally has the power to have diverse meanings and values inside themselves. Art does not purify the values and matters that are considered to be negative (as they threaten the social order and personal identity) but it openly shows and questions the existing rationality, order, and law. Therefore, contemporary art is a good example to represent the concept of Abject. It induces emotional responses and raises questions about identity. In this respect, the artwork that asks questions examines the meaning of the body and identity in the eyes of society. Based on this information the researcher’s experience of troubled identity is applied to his work. A body is used as a tool to embody emotions. Organs represent the inner emotions that the researcher attempts to see through the third eye. By conducting this study, the researcher again could contemplate the problems he ignored in the past. The researcher attempts to be an existence that can understand diversely different values by having the opportunity for negative feelings and expressing them through a body in his artwork. ;본 논문은 주체가 겪는 정체성의 흔들림과 그것으로 야기되는 불안에 대한 연구이다. 연구자는 직접 경험했던 육체적, 정신적 괴로움을 시발점으로 고통과 불안 등의 부정적인 감정들이 정체성에 어떤 영향을 끼치는가에 대한 물음을 가져왔다. 그러한 물음 속에서 신체적 변화, 특히 죽음, 질병, 통증과 같이 부정적인 감정을 일으키는 변화들로부터 정체성은 쉽게 영향을 받는다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 엄습하는 불안과 고통은 주체의 판단을 흐리게 하고 의식을 모호하게 하며 정체성의 경계를 흐린다. 따라서 연구자는 경계를 흐리는 부정적인 요소가 어떠한 양상으로 주체와 사회에 존재하는지 먼저 살펴본 후 연구자의 경험과 결부시켜 정체성에 대한 탐구를 시작하고자 한다. 이에 따라 줄리아 크리스테바(Julia Kristeva)의애브젝트(Abject)의 개념을 통해 고통과 불안이 어떻게 우리 삶에 영향을 주는가를 살펴보았다. 애브젝트는 비천한 것으로 여겨져 주체나 사회에서 외면당하고 배출된 것이지만 주체 주변에 머물며 경계를 넘나들며 질서를 무너뜨리는 존재이다. 이는 고유성과 항상성을 유지하기 위한 경계를 무너뜨리고 이성, 질서를 혼란스럽게 하며 주체를 방황하게 만든다. 연구자는 애브젝트에 대한 연구를 통해 흔들리는 정체성을 경험하는 주체에 대한 이해를 하고자 했고, 우리의 주체가 고정되지 않고 변화하는 과정 중의 주체임을 깨닫고자 하였다. 또한 외부와 내부에서 오는 위협으로 인한 불안과 공포를 승화시킴으로써 다양한 의미와 가치를 가지는 존재로 거듭날 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있음 이해하고자 하였다. 예술은 사회 질서와 개인의 정체성을 위협하고 부정한 것으로 여겨지는 가치와 물질들을 정화시키지 않고 숨김없이 보여줌으로써 이성, 질서, 법칙을 위협한다. 따라서 현대 미술은 경계를 흐리고 위협하는 애브젝트를 가장 잘 보여주고 그를 통한 감정적 반응을 유도하며 정체성에 관한 의문을 제기한다. 이에 따라 경계가 흐려진 신체를 통해 사회가 정의 내린 신체의 의미와 정체성에 관한 의문을 제기하는 작품들을 살펴보았다. 그리고 이러한 연구를 바탕으로 연구자는 정체성의 혼란을 경험한 과정을 작업으로 진행하였다. 감정을 담아내는 도구로 신체를 사용하였고, 내부 장기를 드러냄으로써 연구자의 내부에 있는 감정을 표출하고 스스로를 다른 시각으로 바라봄으로써 새로운 모습과 만나게 되었다. 연구과정을 통해 경계 밖으로 밀어냈던 불편한 감정은 연구자로 하여금 다시 한 번 본인이 마주한 문제에 대해 깊이 생각하게 하였다. 신체를 통해 드러나는 감정과 의미들을 살펴보고 삶에서 부정적으로 나타나는 위험이 가져오는 기회를 통해 단편적인 삶이 아닌 다양한 가치를 이해하는 존재로 거듭나고자 한다.
