Abstract
Mathematical reasoning ability is a core competence emphasized in domestic and international mathematics education. Although teachers’questioning is important to improve students' reasoning ability when teaching reasoning in school mathematics, there have not been sufficient relevant studies. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of questioning expected for activating students’mathematical reasoning. For the purpose, the study classified the types of important reasoning in mathematics learning as deduction, induction, abduction, analogy, metaphor and metonymy, and analyzed the protocols according to Leone Burton’s problem solving model. A qualitative case study of the total 3 sessions was conducted targeting 4 third grade students in H boys’ middle school located in Seoul, and all data was video-recorded. Research questions are as follows : 1. What are the question types activating mathematical reasoning in the mathematics problem solving process? 2. How are students’actual reasoning expressed by questioning in the mathematics problem solving process? This study analyzed questionings that activated mathematical reasoning and the types of reasoning that actually appeared in students, and presented a list of questionings. The findings are as follows. All types of reasoning were activated in problem solving process, especially in the review phase for reflection and extension. The results of the frequency analysis of whether the questionings activated students’reasoning according to its original intention are as follows. The induction-intended questionings all led to induction reasoning. 68.7% of the deduction-intended questionings, 83.3% of the abduction-intended questionings, 45.4% of the Analogy-intended questionings, 85.7% of the metaphor-intended questionings did so. Metonymy-intended questionings were used only for an instruction for signification and symbolization. Based on the results above is the following suggested. When students feel difficulty in reasoning or when the mathematical-concept can not be extended, a math teacher should use the secondary question which recalls previous knowledge or allows them to, activate the meta-abduction and understand the non-changeable characters in order to encourage them to have confidence in the problem-solving. Posing proper questionings which challenge students' thinking and help them express reasoning verbally is only possible when supported with the help of the interactive classroom atmosphere. In particular, questionings that focus on guessing and justification give the chance for students to compare their ideas of each other, thus activating deduction and abduction. Questionings that change the conditions lead to active reasoning skill of analogy by stimulating reflective abstraction. When students show misconceptions and errors by individual metaphorical or metonymic images in the reasoning process, teachers should help students correct errors and move toward broader concepts through reflections based on elaboration-requiring questionings and critical assessment-requiring questionings. This study has implications in that it cultivated mathematical communications among students by carefully observing students’reasoning and posing thoughtful questionings, which can be reflected in school mathematics instruction so that the students showed the enthusiastic mathematical attitude for their reasoning.
