A Delphi Study on Workplace English Needs

Abstract

General English becomes difficult to adapt to the needs in many business occasions because of the rapid development of economic globalization and foreign trade. For this reason, Business English courses increase rapidly in China since 2008; however, the majority of English courses in China still focuses on general business English teaching. Compared with general English, English for Business Purposes is effective to improve the English knowledge of learners and deal with intercultural communication in particular international business contexts. Therefore, need analysis is essential to develop good English program for different business contexts. In order to effectively analyze the English needs, the present study investigated the frequent, difficult, and important English tasks, as well as the needed English skills for Chinese employees in foreign companies. Delphi technique was applied in this study to investigate the current situation of business English from forty Chinese employees who have work experience in foreign companies. There are three rounds of questionnaires. First, an open-ended questionnaire was formulated to collect opinions from participants and forty-eight English tasks and skills were identified. The questionnaires in the second and third round were constructed with these tasks and skills. The second round survey evaluated the frequency, difficulty, and importance of the items on a four-point scale. The third round survey reevaluated the importance of English tasks and CVR was applied to eliminate the invalid items and forty- five items were finally identified. Among these items, forty-four had a decreasing standard deviation and one remain the same, which indicated the participants were getting consensus in this Delphi Study. The findings are expected to present suggestions to develop business English curriculum for students who aims to work in foreign enterprises and organizational English training programs. Based on the results of this study, further investigation can be conducted as the following: First, this study analyzed the business English needs of participants with different background in foreign companies. There might be specific and pertinent results if conduct the need analysis focusing on the participants with identical industry, department, or position. Second, there are six main groups of stakeholders in ESP need analysis. In addition to the learner, further investigation can be conducted to investigate opinions from other groups of stakeholders. Third, the number of participants is limited to forty Chinese employees, the results will be more reliable if collect the opinions from large quantity of participants and conduct the quantitative analysis to verify the results. Fourth, this study focused on the business contexts of Chinese employees in foreign-owned company, whether the findings can be applicable to other business contexts is not apparent. There might be different results of the need analysis according to different types of companies. Moreover, future study will be significant to define the English proficiency of participants first to explore the influence of English proficiency on how participant define difficulty on specific English tasks in workplace.;일반 영어는 경제 세계화와 대외 무역의 급속한 발전으로 인해 많은 비즈니스 기회의 요구에 적응하기가 어려워지고 있다. 이런 이유로 비즈니스 영어 과정은 2008 년부터 중국에서 급격히 증가하고 있다. 그러나 중국의 영어 강좌 대부분은 여전히 일반 비즈니스 영어 강좌를 중심으로 이뤄지고 있다. 비즈니스 영어는 일반적인 영어와 비교하여 학습자의 비즈니스 영어 지식을 향상에 도움을 주며 특히 국제 비즈니스 환경에서 이 문화 커뮤니케이션을 처리하는 데 효과적이다. 따라서 비즈니스 컨텍스트를 위한 우수한 영어 프로그램을 개발하려면 필요 분석이 필수적이다. 본 연구는 영어 요구 사항을 효과적으로 분석하기 위해 비지니스 영어 사용의 빈도, 어려움, 중요한 영어 업무뿐만 아니라 외국 기업에서 중국인 직원에게 필요한 영어 능력을 조사하였다. 본 연구는 3차에 걸친 조사를 통해 외국 기업에서 근무 경험이 있는 40명의 중국인 직원으로 비즈니스 영어에 대한 합의를 도출했다. 1 차 설문 조사는 참가자들로부터 의견을 수렴하기 위해 개방형 설문지를 사용했으며, 48 개의 영어 작업과 기술을 정의하였다. 2 차 및 3 차 설문지는 이러한 과제와 기술로 구성되었다. 2 차 설문 조사는 항목의 빈도, 난이도 및 중요도를 4 점 척도로 평가했다. 3 차 설문 조사에서는 영어 업무의 중요성을 재평가 하였다. CVR 을 적용하여 부적합한 항목을 제거하여 45 개의 항목을 파악하였다. 이러한 항목 중 44 개는 표준 편차가 감소하고 1 개는 같게 유지되었으며, 이는 연구 참여자들이 본 델파이 연구에서 합의점을 찾았음을 나타낸다. 본 연구 결과는 외국계 기업에서 근무하는 것을 목표로 하는 학생들을 위한 영어 교육 커리큘럼 개발 및 외국계에서 근무하는 중국인 직원을 위한 영어 교육 프로그램 개발에 도움이 될 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구 결과를 토대로 향후 연구에 대한 한계점 및 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본 연구는 외국계 기업의 배경이 다른 참가자들을 대상으로 영어 요구 사항을 분석하였다. 따라서 동일한 산업, 부서 또는 직위를 가진 참여자들을 대상으로 연구할 필요성이 있다. 둘째, ESP 필요 분석에 6 개의 주요 이해 관계자 그룹이 있으므로 학습자 외에 다른 이해 관계자의 의견을 조사하기 위한 추가 조사가 수행되어야 할 것이다. 셋째, 연구 참여자의 수가 40 명으로 제한되어 있다. 추후 더 많은 연구 참여자를 대상으로 신뢰도를 높인 양적 연구가 수행되어야 할 것이다. 넷째, 본 연구는 외국계 기업에서 근무하는 중국인 직원을 대상을 중심으로 수행되어 일반화하는 데 한계가 있다. 따라서 향후 연구에서는 이러한 한계가 개선된 연구가 수행되어야 할 것이다.
