Assessing Energy Efficiency and the Relationship with Financial Performance for Energy-intensive Firms in Korea

Abstract

This study is to suggest different relative measures of energy-efficiency based on the circumstances of energy-intensive corporations in Korea, and to identify the relationship with financial performance of them. Under the governmental pressure to decrease the amount of greenhouse gas, firms in Korea face the difficulty in terms of balancing between keeping the regulation and increasing same or more profit. The government needs to prompt subjected corporations to improve their energy-efficiency which produces minimum wastes and but maximum economic value so as to avoid one uniformed system which only concentrating on minimizing the undesirable emission without consideration of operational circumstances in corporations. With real data of finance and energy use, different types of DEA models are developed and applied in this research so as to assess energy efficiency of Korean energy intensive corporations. To verify and to differentiate efficiency results by making use of the simple methodology such as measuring energy intensity is not good enough to generate national institutions and corporations encouraging implications related to the improvement in corporations’ energy efficiency. Therefore, this research extends from overall efficiency to a decomposed two-staged model which involves with two related efficiency measures all at once: pure-energy efficiency designed only for energy-use-related process, and economy efficiency developed for pursuing firms’ high economical value, the profit, in order to attain the enhancement of total overall energy efficiency. The models, then, are developed into a multi-period model which shows the progress of different efficiency as time changes. Not only change of efficiency level can be seen, but the financial growth can also be checked through this model. Based on the results, the relationship between energy efficiency and financial performance can be verified. ;지구온난화와 기후변화에 따른 세계 각국의 온실가스 배출감소를 위한 프로그램과 정책들이 꾸준히 개발되고 있다. 이에 맞추어 기업들 역시 증가하는 에너지비용과 고유가에 따라 천연자원을 보존하면서 지속 가능한 개발 및 경영을 추진하고 있는 추세이다. 특히 국내 기업의 경우, 에너지에 대한 의존도가 다른 나라의 기업들에 비해 상당히 높은 편이며 자원이 부족한 국가임에도 불구하고 에너지 소비량이 세계 10위 안팎을 드나들고 있는 실정이다. 설상가상으로 한국정부는 온실가스에너지목표관리제를 시작으로 2015년 온실가스배출권거래제를 도입하였다. 에너지 다소비 기업이 70%이상을 차지하는 국내 정황상 에너지 사용량과 온실가스 배출 감소에 대한 부담은 오로지 기업의 몫이 되었다. 이에 기업의 관리자와 경영진들은 효율적인 에너지 사용을 통하여 비용과 온실가스 배출량을 감소시킬 수 있는 경영체계를 갖고자 하는 관심이 높아지고 있다. 그러나 에너지효율성이 기업 운영성과에 긍정적인 효과를 미친다는 연구는 많이 이루어지고 있으나 실제 최근 국내 기업사례를 갖고 분석한 연구는 찾기 힘들다. 또한 기업들 역시 에너지효율성의 중요성은 인지하고 있으나 효율성을 향상시키기 위해 어떤 노력을 기울여야 하는지 정보가 부족하다. 그러므로 구체적이고 체계적인 에너지 효율성 분석모델을 개발함으로써, 기업은 에너지효율성 향상을 위한 벤치마킹 기회를 구현할 수 있고, 정부는 기업들에게 정책적인 부담을 덜 수 있는 방향제시의 기회를 마련할 수 있게 된다. 이를 바탕으로 본 연구는 전통적인 자료포괄분석법(DEA)을 이용하여 전반적인 국내기업들의 에너지 효율성을 측정 및 통계검정하고, 더 나아가 에너지효율성에서 기업의 본질적인 경제효율성 개념을 분리하여 순수 에너지 효율성과 경제효율성 사이의 관계를 실제 국내기업사례로 갖고 2단계 네트워크 DEA 모델로 발전시킨다. 마지막단계로, 기간별 효율성 값들의 흐름이 기업의 재무성과에 어떠한 연관성을 가지는지 확인한다.
