Abstract
This study aimed to propose elements of university library makerspace operation by studying overseas cases of university library makerspaces and the current state of library makerspaces in domestic universities. For this purpose, this study conducted a literature review, an investigation of domestic and overseas university library makerspace websites, online surveys, and site surveys. First, the literature review of this study summarized the background, concepts, characteristics, and value of makerspaces by referencing studies related to makerspaces of various types of libraries. In addition, this study referred to research on university library makerspaces to provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of makerspaces in university libraries by summarizing the purpose, value, and necessity of university library makerspaces. Second, for overseas case studies, 22 university library makerspaces were selected from a list of university makerspaces selected by the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan. The basic operation methods of makerspaces were identified through website investigation, and an online survey on the elements of makerspace operation was conducted with the administrators of the makerspaces. The survey consisted of several sections: general information, vision, regulations, budget, personnel, fee, usage, programs, equipment, archiving, and administrator opinions. The survey was revised and supplemented through preliminary studies. The survey was sent to library makerspace administrators of the 22 selected university libraries via e-mail, and a total of 14 responses (63.6%) were received. The elements of university library makerspace operation in overseas universities were summarized via analysis of the survey responses. Third, in order to identify the current state of makerspace operation in domestic university libraries, three makerspaces that are operated in domestic university libraries were selected. The aforementioned survey conducted with the administrators of the overseas cases was also conducted by visiting the three selected libraries, and unstructured interviews were conducted for additional information. The current state of makerspaces in domestic university libraries identified through the interviews were summarized. Lastly, with the above surveys and analysis as a basis, this study proposes the following operation measures based on the elements of university library makerspace operation. First, this study proposes directions for vision and regulation in the operation of library makerspaces. The purpose of a makerspace should be established in addition to regulations including written rules, safety regulations, and rules against ‘no shows’. In the long term, users should be charged fees to use makerspaces. Second, as there are no fixed standards for university library makerspaces in terms of budget size or procurement methods, various methods should be considered to secure budgets. In addition, there are no fixed standards regarding the number or requirements of employees of makerspaces. Students of various majors could be employed, or libraries could partner with private companies to supplement staff expertise. In addition, existing library employees could be required to undertake professional training to supplement the expertise of the staff. Third, makerspaces should be implemented in highly accessible areas of university libraries, and should coexist with collaborative spaces or spaces for personal study. The characteristics and limitations of a makerspace should be identified prior to the acquisition of equipment. In addition to hardware equipment, software-based equipment should also be considered. Fourth, operation measures regarding target users and services are as follows. The target user groups of services provided by university library makerspaces should be specified. University library makerspaces should provide education programs for equipment usage, community programs, curricular and extracurricular programs, and non-regular programs. Through such programs, libraries are able to support users to freely engage in creative activities, garner user interest, and confirm the value of makerspaces. In addition, archiving services should be provided by designating the scope and methods of archiving content and cases arising from makerspace activities. This study aimed to summarize the elements and measures of university library makerspace operation that are applicable to domestic university libraries based on the study of overseas cases of university library makerspaces and the current state of library makerspaces in domestic universities. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the understanding of university library makerspaces and act as a reference for the implementation of makerspaces in university libraries in Korea.
