‘-ㄴ 말이다’의 의미와 기능 연구

Abstract

This study explored the meaning of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’as meta-linguistic and epistemic modality expression and analyzed pragmatic functions. Before the analysis of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’as a meta-linguistic expression, this study defined the meta-phenomenon is as self-relation(relevance) and self-examination and classified types and characteristics of it. Meta-phenomenon can be typed five. It consists of ‘meta-phenomenon(1); examination about first act/accident/meta-act’, ‘meta-phenomenon(2); relation(relevance) with speaker’, ‘meta-phenomenon(3) ; repeatability in act’, ‘meta-phenomenon(4) ; identity in time and space of act’, and ‘meta-phenomenon(5) ; Indentity of participants in communication’. Also the meta-lingual expression consist of meta-language and meta-speech act. This study defined that meta-language is a sign with examination and meta-speech act is combination of linguistic expressions with examination which is pragmatic than meta-language. According to the meta-linguistic analysis, ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ is the meta lingual expression which has meta-phenomenon(1)~(4) without meta-phenemenon(5). Before the analysis of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ as a epistemic modality expression, this study suggested the concept of epistemic modality and defined the meaning of epistemic modality. The modal expression was defined as a speakers psychological attitude about probability, probability and certainty. The meaning of epistemic modality was classified into ‘the attitude towards the actualization of proposition’, ‘the descriptive attitude towards the content of proposition’, and ‘the attitude towards the listeners’-in stereographic manner’ according to three variables that conclude the meaning of modal expression. In detail, the attitude towards the actualization of proposition was subdivided into [vagueness]-[probability]-[definiteness] depending on the degree of certainty, the descriptive attitude towards the content of proposition was classified into ‘confident attitude’ and ‘distrust attitude’. And the attitude towards the listeners'-in stereographic manner was devided into ‘unknown assumption’ that a speaker thinks listener didn't know what speaker will say and ‘known assumption’ that listener knows speakers' proposition. According to the analysis, the attitude towards the actualization of proposition of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ is attitude to have high degree of certainty[definiteness]. Also ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ doesn't have the truth and duty. And it has definite attitude on the basis of speakers thoughts and opinions. In the descriptive attitude towards the content of proposition, it has ‘confident attitude’ that is high degree of confidence. And it has ‘unknown assumption’ that a speaker thinks listener didn't know what speaker will say. On the basis of the meta-linguistic and sematic analysis, the pragmatic function of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ has pragmatic functions to express confidence and emphasize about speakers' speaking. Moreover it has additional explanation about preceded speaking and description function about situation due to meta-phenomenon characteristic. Above all, ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ has impolite function when speaker assert opposite opinions to listener who is upper person than speaker. Especially it hurts politeness more when the contents of opinions aren't useful to listener. Main cause of it is not only the modal meaning but also meta-phenomenon of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’. Although ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ has function to emphasize speakers' opinions but it hasn't had researched before. So this study concentrated on ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ and explored meta-linguistic and modal meanings. Especially, this study conceptualized and typed meta-phenomenon because ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ is meta lingual expression. then it analyzed meta-phenomenons of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’. Also this study suggested the meaning of epistemic modality depending on three variables that conclude the meaning of modal expression and analyzed in modal meaning. Furthermore, this study explored functions of ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ though conversation. Especially it is discovered that ‘-ㄴ mal-ida’ has a function to reinforce the impoliteness in particular conditions. However this study didn't consider tone, accent and intonation and any other non-verbal factors. Researches considered non-verbal factors should be needed later.;본 연구는 메타언어표현 및 양태표현으로서 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’를 의미를 살피고 실제 담화에서의 기능을 고찰한다. ‘-ㄴ 말이다’는 명제에 대한 화자의 태도를 강조하는 양태 표현이라는 점에서 ‘-는/ㄴ 것이다’와 유사하지만 의미와 기능에 차이가 있으며 자신을 객체로 삼아 되돌아보는 메타성을 띤 메타언어표현이라는 독특한 지점을 가진다. 또한 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’는 특정 담화적 상황에서 탈(脫)공손성의 강화 기능을 보이는데, 이를 포함하여 실제 담화에서의 기능들을 살핀다. 1장에서는 본 연구의 배경과 목적을 밝히고, ‘-는/ㄴ N이다’로 문법화 된 명사구 보문 구성의 양태적 의미에 대한 기존의 연구 및 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’를 다룬 선행 연구를 검토하며 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’가 충분히 논의되지 않았음을 확인하였다. 이를 토대로 본고의 연구 대상의 범위를 정하고 통사적 특성을 검토하였으며 연구 방법을 제시하였다. 2장에서는 메타언어표현으로서 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’를 분석하기에 앞서 메타성의 개념을 살피고 유형을 분류한 뒤 메타언어표현을 메타언어와 메타화행으로 나누어 각 개념과 특징을 정리하였다. 분류한 메타성의 유형을 토대로 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’의 메타적 의미를 분석한 결과, ‘-ㄴ 말이다’는 발화내용 및 행위에 대해 성찰성을 띠었고, 발화 주체와 연관성을 가졌으며 발화의 자기반복성을 보였다. 또한 발화 시간 및 공간이 동일하다는 메타성을 가졌다. 3장에서는 양태표현으로서 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’를 분석하기에 앞서 인식양태의 개념을 살핀 뒤 인식양태의 의미영역을 설정하였다. 특히 인식양태의 의미영역을 인식양태의 변수에 따라 설정하여 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’의 양태적 의미를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’를 사용하는 화자는 명제 실현에 대한 [확연]의 태도를, 명제 내용에 대한 [확신적] 태도를, 청자가 화자의 명제에 대해 잘 알지 못한다고 가정하는 [미지가정]의 태도를 보였다. 4장에서는 ‘-ㄴ 말이다’의 의미 분석을 토대로 실제 담화에서의 기능을 분석하였다. ‘-ㄴ 말이다’는 담화 상황에 따라 발화의 확신 및 강조의 기능을 보였으며, 상황에 대한 서술 기능을 가졌다. 또한 선행된 발화를 부연설명하기도 하였다. 무엇보다 탈(脫)공손의 강화 기능을 보였는데, 그 정도는 청자가 화자보다 상위자인 상황에서 화자의 주장이 청자와 일치하지 않고 그 내용이 청자에게 이득이 없을 때 가장 높았다. 마지막으로 5장에서는 본 연구의 논의를 요약하고 의의와 한계를 밝혔다.
