Abstract
This study examined how music and imagery involves the experiences of mindfulness. For the purpose, the music and image (MI) technique was applied to music therapy interns and their experiences were analyzed using the grounded theory research method. This study was conducted in two stages. At the first stage, the applicability of the MI as a mindfulness approach was investigated. A total of 11 music therapy interns participated in eight group MI sessions. The potential for theoretical saturation was analyzed as the properties and dimensions were derived from the data on their experiences. The results showed that a total of 114 Meaning Units (MU) and three categories (i.e., ‘awareness’ for 81 units, ‘acceptance’ for 18 units, and ‘distancing’ for 15 units) were identified. Subcategories included the followings: ‘thought,’ ‘sensation,’ and ‘emotion’ under the category of ‘awareness,’ ‘facing’ and ‘broadening view points’ under the category of ‘acceptance,’ and ‘dissociation of emotion’ and ‘dissociation of sensation’ under the category of ‘distancing.’ These findings supported that the MI technique could be applied as a mindfulness approach. Furthermore, the study elucidated that music and imagery, as components of the MI, facilitated inter experiences of participants while involving the components of mindfulness. At the second stage, the MI program that would best fit for mindfulness was constructed and implemented with a total of 11 music therapy interns. In order to gather sufficient data, participant-written documentation and transcriptions of participants’ verbal statements on experiences during each session were collected and in-depths interviews were also conducted with each participant after the sixth session. Based on the collected data, the grounded theory method was employed to generate a theory on how the MI accounts for mindfulness of music therapy interns. A total of 218 concepts arose from the collected data via the open coding procedure and such concepts were grouped into 22 subcategories which fell into seven categories. The axial coding procedure explored the relationship between the seven categories and identified ‘state of being preoccupied with their role as a music therapy intern’ as a causal condition, ‘expansion of sensation through music’ and ‘distancing from imagery with contemplation’ as the core phenomenon, ‘individuality across the participants’ as a context, ‘nowness of music’ and ‘member-related factors’ as an intervening condition, and ‘regaining the sense of control’ as a consequence. The core process identified through the grounded theory represents ‘the process of regaining sense of control in the field of music.’ The theoretical model derived from this study demonstrated that the state of mindfulness stimulated by the MI was that of observing the self as it is, while broadening the sensation through music and being aware of self-representation arisen from the dynamical imagery. While engaging in the MI program as a mindful approach, participants were able to pay attention to the sensation in the moment, stop self-critical thoughts, and regulate their focus of attention on the self. In alliance with the representation in the imagery, music played the role of capturing their orientation toward their experiences. Particularly, they could dissociate themselves from the experiences, become aware of representation of the self as the distanced observer, and notice their feelings. Concurrently, they could be mindful of the pain that had been numbed or avoided and their reactivity to it. Such self-distancing allowed the participants to obtain new understanding of the level and significance of the pain. Through the mindfulness practice supported by the MI, the participating music therapy interns were able to become non-judgemental, accept themselves, and restore the self-control while gaining broadened insight into their inner and outside world. This study generated the theory from the experiences of music therapy interns, in terms of how the MI affects the state of mindfulness. Music-stimulated sensation and feelings led to mindfulness of body and emotional sensation in the moment. Imagery allowed the participants to engage in self-distancing and to observe and accept themselves from a new perspective. The theory generated from this study represents how the MI as a mindful approach based the process of transferring from mindlessness to mindfulness and from the state of being caught up in thoughts to the process of regaining self-control in music therapy interns. This study delineated and substantiated the therapeutic elements of the MI, while broadening its application to pre-service music therapy professionals in terms of mindful and self-care practice. It also suggested the expanded clinical training for music therapy interns and presented implications for the area of music psychotherapy and related clinical practice and research.
