Abstract
This study is about the Violin Sonata in e minor, K.304 by W. A. Mozart, the Violin Sonata No. 3 in d minor, Op.108 by J. Brahms and the Romanian Folk Dances for Violin and Piano by B. Bartók, which are included in the master's degree graduation concert program of the researcher. W. A. Mozart's Violin Sonata in e minor, K.304 was composed during the period of Mannheim in the middle of his life and features a development showing an equal relationship between the violin and piano, which is a distinct difference from his earlier sonatas. The work is composed of two movements; The first movement begins with the first theme of heavy octave unison, which contrasts with the cheerful and light second theme, while the second movement is characterized by a lyrical and mourning triple-time melody. Each movement follows the sonata form and the rondo form. The Violin Sonata No. 3 in d minor, OP.108 of J. Brahms (1833~1897) was composed in 1886 when he stayed in Switzerland and was completed in 1888. With a total of the four movements that follow the sonata, binary, ternary, and sonata forms, respectively, the work has a similar form to that of a symphony. Composed in a very structured way, the work features a vigorous contrapuntal imitation among parts and a single motif dominating all movements, which organically connects them. Rhythmically, the sonata represents two to three rhythm (compound rhythm), hemiola rhythm and syncopation. In terms of melody, it is lyrical, mournful and sometimes explosive. In addition, a strong sense of the concerto form of the violin and piano highlights Brahms' romanticism. The Romanian Folk Dances for Violin and Piano by B. Bartók (1881-1945) is based on a short piece of folk dance music transcribed in four regions of Transylvania in Romania, which was formerly in the territory of Hungary. The original was composed in the form of a piano piece, but was later arranged by Zoltán Székely (1903-2001) with the composition of violin and piano parts. It is divided into six dance pieces in total, and actively uses poly meter, hemiola rhythm and syncopation influenced by folk music. In addition, the accent on the first beat according to a characteristic of Hungarian is prominent, and the theme section is represented in the circle of fifths. The ostinato in the accompaniment is arranged in sequence to express various tones.
