Landon Ronald의 연가곡 「A Cycle of Life」에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 랜던 로날드(Landon Ronald, 1873-1938)의 연가곡 「A Cycle of Life」에 관한 연구이다. 영국의 20세기 성악음악은 독일의 예술가곡 작곡가들의 영향을 받아서 시적이고 감상적인 낭만시대의 연가곡을 연상케 한다는 것이 특징이다. 로날드의 연가곡 「A Cycle of Life」역시 이러한 20세기 초반 영국 성악음악의 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다. 로날드는 영국의 작곡가로서, 피아노 소품과 성악곡, 교향시, 발레곡들을 포함한 여러 장르의 곡을 총 300여곡 작곡했으며, 「A Cycle of Life」는 그의 대표적인 성악 작품 중의 하나이다. 이 작품은 1906년에 발표된 20세기 음악이지만 현대음악의 특징인 복잡한 화성과 무조주의를 추구하기보다는 전통적인 작곡기법을 사용하였고, 시의 의미에 부합되는 단순하고 아름다운 선율을 사용하여 시의 내용을 섬세하게 표현하였다. 「A Cycle of Life」는 해럴드 심슨(Harold Simpson, 1909-1955)의 시를 바탕으로 인간의 삶의 여정과 사랑을 주제로 작곡되었다. 전체 다섯 곡으로 이루어져 있으며, ‶Prelude″를 시작으로 ‶Down in the Forest″, ‶Love, I have won you″, ‶The winds are calling″, ‶Drift down, drift down″으로 구성된다. 제 1곡을 제외한 네 곡은 차례대로 Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter의 부제목을 가지고 있는데 이는 인생을 사계절에 비유한 것이다. 또한 각 곡은 사랑의 과정을 묘사하고 있는데, 이는 삶과 사랑은 밀접한 관계이고 사계절이 반복하고 순환하듯이 우리의 삶과 사랑도 반복적으로 순환된다는 것을 보여준다. 로날드는 시의 내용을 섬세하게 음악에 표현하였는데 다양한 나타냄말과 지시어를 통해 연주자에게 구체적인 지시를 했고, 레치타티보의 사용과 같은 새로운 시도를 하기도 했다. 또한 피아니스트이기도 했던 로날드는 반주에 화려한 화성과 다양한 음형들을 사용하면서, 반주가 노래의 뒷받침뿐만 아니라 이 연가곡의 가사를 표현하는데 있어 큰 역할을 했다. 본 논문에서는 영국의 성악음악의 시대적 흐름을 짚어보고, 로날드의 생애와 그의 음악 작품들을 살펴볼 것이다. 그리고, 작품에 나타난 가사와 음악의 밀접한 관계에 초점을 두어 「A Cycle of Life」을 분석함으로써 이 작품을 이해하고 연주하는데 도움이 되고자 한다. ;This study examines Landon Ronald(1873-1938)′s song-cycle,「A Cycle of Life」, aiming to help performers better understand this musical work. The study investigates the historical evolution of the English songs and Ronald′s life and his musical works. Then, this study analyzes the songs, focusing on the close relationship between the lyrics and the music. The English songs in the 20th-century were significantly influenced by the lied of German composers. These songs reflect being lyrical and sentimental, the quality found in song-cycles of the Romantic period. Likewise, Ronald′s 「A Cycle of Life」 shows these characteristics of the 20th-century English songs. Ronald, a representative composer of the 20th-century English music, wrote more than 300 musical works including piano and vocal works, symphonic poems, and ballet music. 「A Cycle of Life」is one of his representative vocal works. Although this song cycle is a 20th-century musical work written in 1906, Ronald uses traditional compositional techniques along with simple and beautiful melodies to portray the lyrics, rather than employing complicated harmonies and atonality of the 20th-century music. Based on Harold Simpson(1909-1955)′s poems,「A Cycle of Life」 is about the journey of life and love. This work consists of five songs: ‶Prelude″, ‶Down in the Forest″, ‶Love, I have won you″, ‶The winds are calling″, and ‶Drift down, drift down″. Except for the first song, the other four songs have subtitles, ‶Spring″, ‶Summer″, ‶Autumn″, and ‶Winter″ to symbolize four seasons of life. In addition, each song portrays the process of love. This demonstrates how life and love are inseparable and they are cyclic just as four seasons are. In these songs, Ronald delicately expresses the lyrics by inserting detailed musical indications including pedaling and by employing new expressive devices such as the use of recitatives. Moreover, Ronald, who was a pianist, uses colorful harmonies and sonority in the piano accompaniment so that the accompaniment is not only a background to the songs, but plays a substantial role in this song cycle.
