;While the elderly population is rapidly increasing, the indices of the mental health or the well-being of the elderly in our country are problematic. Most previous researches have reached a consensus that quality of social relationship is critical when it comes to the well-being of the elderly. This study focuses on the emotion of gratitude widely known as improving the quality of social relationship and promoting the well-being. In addition, the purpose of this study is to ultimately contribute to the maximization of the mental well-being of the elderly through examining the role of emotion of indebtedness commonly accompanying the emotion of gratitude. The role of emotion of gratitude has been studied through many researches, while the role of emotion of Indebtedness has not been fully examined. When it comes to the present Korean elderly generation which has lived with the culture of Confucianism and Buddhism that emphasizes the importance of repaying the debt after receiving help from someone, there is a high possibility that the emotions of gratitude and Indebtedness are accompanied at the same time. Considering the fact that the state of perceived burdensomeness which is very similar to the emotion of Indebtedness negatively affects the well-being of the elderly, there is a possibility that the effect of emotion of gratitude on the well-being of the elderly might change according to the magnitude of the emotion of Indebtedness. However, the moderating effects of emotion of Indebtedness have only been mentioned as possibilities and the effects have not been confirmed empirically. The results of researches on relationship between emotions of gratitude and indebtedness have been inconsistent. Even in Korea, there has not been a consensus on whether the emotions of gratitude and indebtedness are different. Therefore, this study has explored the role of emotions of gratitude and indebtedness in the marital relationship, considering that the marital relationship is crucial for the mental well-being in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the emotions of gratitude and Indebtedness toward the spouse can be distinguished from each other and confirm the distinguished roles of emotions of gratitude and Indebtedness on the mental well-being for the elderly. Furthermore, this study aimed to examine the mechanism that the emotion of gratitude toward the spouse promotes mental well-being and explore the role of emotion of indebtedness in this mechanism in elderly couple. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the possibility for emotion of Indebtedness moderating relationship that emotion of gratitude toward the spouse directly predicts the mental well-being. A confirmation, on whether the emotions of gratitude and Indebtedness can be distinguished, was required. Specifically, structural equation modeling analysis was performed using the data of 191 people who were aged from 65 to 75 residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Daegu areas. Firstly, it has been confirmed that emotions of gratitude and indebtedness toward the spouse are surely distinguishable using factor analysis. Afterwards, the correlations were examined between emotions of gratitude and indebtedness toward the spouse, other positive and negative emotions, and other major variables. As a result, the emotion of gratitude toward the spouse showed significant positive correlations with most positive emotions while there were no correlation between the emotion of gratitude and the most negative emotions. On the other hand, the emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse showed significant positive correlations with the most negative emotions while there were no correlation between the emotion of indebtedness and the most positive emotions. In other words, emotions of gratitude and indebtedness toward the spouse had different emotional valence. In addition, the emotion of gratitude toward the spouse was positively correlated with expressing gratitude, marital satisfaction, perceived partner responsiveness and mental well-being. Whereas the emotion of indebtedness has no correlation with marital satisfaction and perceived partner responsiveness. Moreover, it was confirmed that the emotions of gratitude and indebtedness possess different characteristics depending on the gender. The emotions of gratitude and indebtedness showed a positive correlation, and the emotion of gratitude had a positive correlation with feeling sorry in the group of elderly men. However, these correlations were not significant in the group of elderly women. Furthermore, the emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse and mental well-being were negatively correlated in the group of elderly women, but not elderly men. There was a positive correlation between the emotion of indebtedness and expressing gratitude toward the spouse in the group of elderly men, but not elderly women. Next, structural equation model analysis was conducted in order to verify the fact that emotions of gratitude and indebtedness toward the spouse predict mental well-being. As a result, the emotion of gratitude positively predicted the mental well-being while the emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse negatively predicted the mental well-being. Afterwards, a multi-group analysis was conducted in order to determine whether the relationship between mental well-being and emotions of gratitude and indebtedness toward the spouse changes depending on the gender. As a result, it was concluded that the relationship between mental well-being and emotions of gratitude and indebtedness toward the spouse does not vary according to gender. Finally, analysis of the latent interaction model was conducted in order to confirm relationship between mental well-being and emotion of gratitude differ according to the level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. As a result, it was concluded that there were no moderation effects of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse on the relationship between emotion of gratitude and mental well-being. However, multi-group analysis of latent interaction model was conducted according to the previous studies which showed that the characteristics of emotion of indebtedness vary depending on the gender. As a result, the differences of the interaction effects between the male and female groups were statistically significant. For the male group, the interaction effect of the emotions of gratitude and indebtedness were significant whereas the interaction effect for the female group were almost marginally significant when the significance level was tested at 5%. For men, it was found that the positive relationship between emotion of gratitude toward the spouse and mental well-being was stronger when the emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse was low. However, as for women, the positive relationship between emotion of gratitude toward the spouse and mental well-being was only significant on cases where the emotion of indebtedness was high. Study 2 was conducted in order to confirm the specific mechanism that emotion of gratitude affects mental well-being for married elderly couple and check whether this mechanism varies depending on the magnitude of emotion of indebtedness of wives and husbands toward the spouse. For this study, data from 747 couples who were aged from 65 to 75 living in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Daegu regions were used. First of all, the factor analysis was conducted in order to examine whether the emotions of gratitude and indebtedness can be distinguished in the data of the elderly couple as well. As a result, it was reaffirmed that the emotions of gratitude and indebtedness were distinguishable even in the data of elderly couple. Next, an analysis of the structural equation model was conducted using Actor-Partner Interdependence Model(APIM) in order to verify the mechanism emotion of gratitude toward the spouse affects positive mental well-being of themselves and their partners of the married elderly couple. As a result, in both husbands and wives, the emotions of gratitude toward the spouse affected the mental well-being by mediating the expression of gratitude or the perceived partner responsiveness. In addition, husbands’ emotion of gratitude toward the spouse and husbands’mental well-being were mediated by husbands’ expression of gratitude and husbands’perceived partner responsiveness. And husbands’ emotion of gratitude toward the spouse and wives’mental well-being were mediated by husbands’ expression of gratitude and wives’perceived partner responsiveness. Furthermore, wives’ emotion of gratitude toward the spouse directly contributed to mental well-being of wives and husbands. Lastly, the examination was conducted to determine if there is a difference in the specific mechanism that wives’ and husbands’ emotions of gratitude toward the spouse affect the mental well-being of the couple according to wives’ and husbands’ levels of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. For this examination, a multi-group analysis was conducted from the groups in high/low 30% in the variable of emotion of indebtedness of husbands and wives toward the spouse. As a result, it was revealed that the specific mechanism that the emotions of gratitude toward the spouse affect the mental well-being of the couple only vary according to the level of the wives’ emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse, but not to the level of the husbands'. First of all, the emotion of gratitude of wives positively predicted wives’ perceived partner responsiveness more in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse than in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. Secondly, emotion of gratitude of wives marginally positively predicted perceived partner responsiveness of husbands in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse, but the emotion of gratitude of wives positively predicted perceived partner responsiveness of husbands in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse when tested using a significance level of 5%. Thirdly, the expressing gratitude of wives positively predicted the perceived partner responsiveness of wives in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse, but negatively predicted in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. Fourth, the expressing gratitude of wives positively predicted the perceived partner responsiveness of husbands in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse, but negatively predicted in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. Fifth, the emotion of gratitude of husbands positively predicted perceived partner responsiveness of husbands in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse, but did not predict in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. Sixth, the emotion of gratitude of husbands positively predicted the perceived partner responsiveness of wives in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse, but negatively predicted in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. Seventh, expressing gratitude of husbands positively predicted wives’ perceived partner responsiveness more in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse than in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. Finally, expressing gratitude of husbands predicted the husbands’ well-being more in the group with wives who have high level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse than in the group with wives who have low level of emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. This study has significance in that emotions of gratitude and indebtedness from the elderly couple has been distinguished. Also, more significance can be found in the fact that the mechanism that emotion of gratitude toward the spouse affects mental well-being for the elderly. Moreover, the mediating role of expressing gratitude and perceived partner responsiveness were found between emotion of gratitude toward the spouse and mental well-being of the couple. This means that promoting expressing gratitude and perceived partner responsiveness can be the main focus of the intervention for improving mental well-being of the elderly. In addition, significance can be found in the fact that this study empirically demonstrates the emotion of indebtedness moderates the relationship between emotion of gratitude and mental well-being. Especially, the fact that the mechanism that emotion of gratitude affects mental well-being differs depending on the level of emotion of indebtedness of wives was a very important discovery. These results suggest that the intervention to promote mental well-being for elderly couple should be carried out considering the magnitude of wives’ emotion of indebtedness toward the spouse. An intervention that induce the emotion of gratitude toward the spouse is needed for the couple. Also, wives with having high level of emotion of indebtedness toward their husbands need to practice expressing gratitude toward the spouse clearly. Moreover, there has to be a focus for wives with high level of emotion of indebtedness toward their husbands to perceive the situation as it is without distorting the situation. Also, intervention that focuses on the husbands actively expressing emotion of gratitude toward the spouse would help maximizing the mental well-being of the elderly couple.-
