Abstract
Languages have different sounds that vary in language-specific ways. Non-native learners are likely to face difficulties in the acquisition of a second language (L2) due to the foreign sound contrast. The major challenge is to determine the relative acoustic properties that native speakers use to achieve native-like pronunciation. Moreover, learners need to establish the specific cue-weighting patterns of the native speakers to discriminate the foreign sounds. Several studies support the fact that incomplete acquisition of L2 results in a foreign accent due to diverse factors such as age of acquisition, amount of experience, and similarity between L1 and L2 (Lennenberg, 1967; Flege, Bohn, & Jang, 1997; Baker & Trofimovich, 2005). In addition, cross-language phonetic interference affects the production and perception of L2 learners. Regarding the different vowel systems in Korean and English, the present study supposes that L2 learners with more experience are likely to have native-like production and perception, whereas those with less experience would face difficulty articulating and identifying vowels. This speculation is supported by several theories and models regarding the acquisition of L2, such as Speech Learning Model (Flege, 1995), Perceptual Assimilation Model (Best, 1995), and Exemplar-based Model (Foulkes & Docherty, 2006). The current thesis investigates spectral and temporal features of production and perception of English vowels /i, ɪ, ɛ, æ/ as well as the relationship between them. Two experiments were conducted to test the articulation and cue-weighting patterns of the learner participants. The participants consisted of eight English native male speakers and fourteen Korean native male learners of English that were divided into two groups based on their experience with English. The test materials comprised 4 words with target vowels. Stimuli for perception experiment were modified from a real natural sound produced by a male American speaker. The experienced Korean learners had temporal and spectral values similar to the native English speakers, and had significant differences for F1, F2, and duration for each vowel. However, the vowel productions of inexperienced learners were distinguishable as they had less spectral differences between the vowel pairs. Furthermore, there were less temporal differences between the vowel pairs, which contradicts the findings of Flege, Bohn, & Jang (1997) that the inexperienced speakers had larger duration differences. The second experiment regarding perception suggested that the native English listeners primarily relied on spectral cues in vowel identification. The experienced learners tended to have cue-weighting patterns similar to the native listeners by relying mainly on spectral cue, but also had reliance on temporal cues. The inexperienced learners had difficulty identifying English vowels and mostly relied on duration to distinguish the vowels. The present study aimed to discover the effect of production on the perception of L2 learners and the influence of L2 experience. The results indicate that learners who produced native-like vowels had perceptual pattern similar to the native speakers. Moreover, both English vowel production and perception of L2 learners are influenced by experience levels. Higher experience levels result in more native-like articulation and cue-weighting strategies in perception, whereas less experienced learners face struggles.
